About the Author
Francis Bacon, philosopher, essayist, lawyer and statesman, was born in London in 1561. He studied at Cambridge and was enrolled at Gray’s Inn in 1576. In 1584 he entered Parliament as the member for Melcombe Regis, subsequently representing other constituencies. Bacon made the acquaintance of the Earl of Essex, who endeavored to advance him in his career. Nevertheless, having been appointed to investigate the causes of Essex’s revolt in 1601, Bacon was largely responsible for the earl’s conviction. Bacon was appointed Solicitor-General in 1607 and was successively Attorney-General (1613), Lord Keeper (1617) and Lord Chancellor (1618). He was created Baron Verulam in 1618 and Viscount St. Albans in 1621. Later in that year he was charged with bribery and confessed that he had been guilty of ‘corruption and neglect’ but denied that he had ever perverted justice. He was deprived of the Great Seal, fined, imprisoned in the Tower and disabled from sitting in Parliament. Following his release, he retired to the family home at Gorhambury, Hertfordshire, and his remaining years were spent in literary and philosophical work. It was Bacon’s ambition to create a new system of philosophy to replace that of Aristotle, and he has been justly acclaimed as an inspiration to later scientists, rationalists and materialists. Of his philosophical works, the principal and best known are The Advancement of Learning, Novum Organum and De Augmentis. He also wrote several professional works including Maxims of the Law and Reading on the Statue of Uses. Of his literary writings the most important are the Essays (1597; issued in final form in 1625), De Sapientia Veterum, Apophthegms New and Old and a History of Henry VII. Francis Bacon died in 1626

There is not much here to say that the other reviewers have not covered: Sir Francis was a truly sharp witted mind, and knew how to write good prose, and how to run his topics and resolutions home to the reader. As style goes, I personally go easily between Aristotle and Bacon in the same day, and often. To me I see much of Aristotle in Francis' works (as in his high-formal writing style), yet it seems he did not know Greek. Most of his quotations and analogies he draws from Latin writers (a large proportion seems to be Virgil and Tacitus; midst a handful of others strewn throughout).

As far as Sir Francis' writing goes, theres little bad to say, and a lot of good. This is worth reading for any philosopher, or even anyone trying to get a good hold of formal prose. He might to some seem a tad difficult to read at first, but it shouldn't prove a real obstacle for anyone actually interested in the reading -- after you read just a couple of his essays, you will likely start to get used to his style quickly. I suggest looking in the Contents and just picking out a few that look like topics you couldn't deny interest - that will get you hooked, and into the style.

As for the editor John Pitcher, there are many good things, but a certain terribly annoying quality that weighs as heavy as all the good in my opinion.
For those who do not know Latin extensively (i.e., limited vocabulary and grammar, or none at all) the annotations are of course great and indispensable. Pitcher also generously untangles Francis' allusions and such, which are helpful also at times.
But something that he (Pitcher) follows in other editors of Bacon's works, is complete asinine glossing of words in context which makes complete sense. And he does this extensively. Oftentimes in a work that actually does have an archaic vocabulary, the first glossing of the word is taken to carry its meaning through the essay, but though "estate" is used 10 times in the 2-3 page essay Pitcher will put a note at each occurrence and gloss "state" (not to mention in its context the glossing of that word is obvious and unnecessary). The amount of 'archaic' vocabulary is small and simple throughout the book; a half-page glossary could've been supplied instead of bogging the pages down with redundant annotations of obvious words and thus hurting the actually important annotations.
But all that said, this is still a great edition, a great book, great author, and even by the above facts this is probably the best publication of Francis' essays. The annoying glossing isn't too bad after you get used to it.

I first encountered Francis Bacon's "Essays" many, many years ago during college. My copy was a college library edition, so it did not remain a part of my permanent collection. However, some 25+ years later, I purchased the Penguin Classics edition to reread and reminisce about my school days, and I was not disappointed. Personally I found his essays fascinating, eloquent, philosophical, and brilliant. If I were in the same line of work I was in 15 years ago, I would study and memorize some of his quotes and use them in arguments with my colleagues and especially against my enemies.

"it's been awhile, i shouldnt've left you..."

if you cant see the appropriateness of quoting the rapper rakim in the review title for sun ra's poetry, then you might not want to check this book out - its definitely for the eclectic creative collector types more interested in the process of creative literature more than the academic pursuit of it (although, this book would be a great resource material for the studious academia, especially those interested in music and poetry).

as a writer and artist, i find the works of sun ra very inspirational, something i keep close by when the other sparks to my creativity arent getting the job done. i mean, you're not gonna find yourself sitting over brie and wine reciting these poems to your lover (or maybe you will, if you're anything like me and you're just one-weird-individual�) - the value of this collection is 1.) - its source and 2.) - the feeding of any gnawing spiritual need manifesting itself within you.

What can 30-something women teach me?

Denise is remarkable in the impact she has, and her drive for amplifying the voices of girls and women. When I first heard the premise of this book, in all candor, I didn't think there would be much for a 50-year-old male to learn from, or have in common with, thirty-something women. Gosh, was I wrong!!! Their candor and individual lessons of hope (starting with the author's own story!), while sometimes conveyed a roller-coaster ride of emotions, all leave the reader with something to take away with them. Whether it's about love, or passion, or forgiveness, or social conscience, or driving for change...I guarantee you that you will get something positive out of reading this book! Well done, Denise!

Important book to read as a twentysomething too

Send this book to the ereaders of as many ambitious 30-something friends/mentees that you can -- they'll relate so much -- AND to late-20somethings you know. I'm 28 and read this in one day - I just couldn't stop reading one story after another. Denise is filling an important void on the bookshelf -- you won't be disappointed reading this "what I know now" and "what I wish I knew then" advice from professional 30somethings, especially if you're close to transitioning into that new decade. Thank you to all the women who shared their brutally honest and deeply passionate stories!

A Wide Range of Projects Illustrates Specific Technical Options!

Beginner's Guide to Digital Painting in Photoshop Elements is literally a step-by-step manual that leaves nothing to guesswork and assumes no prior knowledge of Photoshop Elements, and is a recommendation for newcomers to both Photoshop Elements and the concept of digital painting.

While other books cover both topics, the notable difference here is a step-by-step format, the inclusion of charts and graphs to supplement painting examples, and both small-sized and full-page color embellishments that lend life to the process and teach by example.

Many titles overwhelm beginners with too much information packed into too short a format. Others present an approach that assumes a degree of program, computer, or artistic knowledge. In order to truly appeal to beginners, the superior production makes none of these assumptions and provides a comprehensive overview that builds a basic software knowledge base, then uses projects to teach art theory and advanced applications.

Another 'plus' is the projects themselves, which range from animated figures to landscape scenes that include fire, clouds, all kinds of lighting effects (from moonlight to artificial lighting), and a host of characters. The specific details and examples in Beginner's Guide to Digital Painting in Photoshop Elements review all the options and the technical details to achieve them: add a dash of basic art knowledge and the rest is up to a reader's creativity and drive.

Very helpful beginner's guide for beginners

I've reviewed the earlier one Beginner's Guide to Digital Painting in Photoshop also and the presentation format is similar with this book. The plastic slipcase cover is gone and the book's also less expensive. Nice.

The content's split into four parts.

In the first section, there's Rich Tilbury introducing the interface and painting tools available for Photoshop Elements. It's for the beginners so it assumes no prior knowledge with the software. If you're new, you'll get up to speed quickly. The software version used in the book is Photoshop Elements 12 and at the time of this writing, version 13 is already out (and cheaper). Anyway, the interface should look more or less the same.

The next section there's Christopher Peters who talks about the basic techniques in art theory. He covers light and colour, composition, perspective and depth and other subjects. It's a very informative section that has steps that you can follow along. Again, the content is written in a simple and easy to gasp manner for beginners with no art knowledge.

The third section has several full length tutorials from contributing artists. The tutorials look at various art styles, such as landscapes, stylised illustration, speed-painting, working with traditional sketches or photos, cartoons, etc. You can easily follow along to learn the techniques and get yourself familiar with the painting tools used. It's helpful in the sense that you'll know what's the correct tool to use when you think of certain effects you want to create.

The next section has quick tips and steps to create common textures, such as clouds, water, rock, dirt, trees, rain, fire, smoke, hair, skin, and many more. It's very useful for beginners to get them started at creating their own textures. Takes a bit of guess work out but I like the quick tips.

Last section has step by step screenshots of artworks by several artists. No captions provided here though.

Great book overall. Recommended to beginners who wants to learn digital painting using Photoshop Elements.

Beginner's Guide to Digital Painting in Photoshop Elements.
By not just any fule
This book has some good information but I don't care for the format.It is a very wide book,11.75 inches wide. That makes it unwieldy when trying to follow the projects on the computer. Also might benefit from some editing of projects and larger type. I don't regret buying but I doubt I will buy others in this format.
