Great resource for dieting vegetarians

This cookbook is a fantastic resource for vegetarians or vegans looking to use a low-carb diet. I'm sure most vegetarians, like me, are well aware than our choice of diet is not exactly low-carb. And looking through most low-carb cookbooks supporting the "Atkins Diet" or "South Beach Diet" or similar doesn't offer much hope.

This book changes that. It is packed with good-tasting, vegetarian (and in many cases, vegan) recipes that are low in carbs, higher in fat and protein.

American readers should note that this is an English cookbook. All measurements are in both SI (metric) and US (or Imperial) units, so you won't have any problems there. However, some terms will require a little research. Keep a dictionary -- or the internet, or both -- handy. E.G. "Courgettes" are zucchini. "Dolcelate" is a milder version of Gorgonzola made for export to England. Don't neglect a recipe just because you haven't heard of it, because chances are, you have -- just under a different name.

And a few recipes have measurements in both systems that aren't very close, like 300 ml vs. 1/2 pint. You may wish to try them both ways, your measuring cups probably are labeled for both anyway -- think of it as a game.

The tarragon, Peccorino, almond tart is just fantastic. Even if you live somewhere in the sticks like me and Peccorino (sheep's milk) Romano is hard to find.

My final comment: I am finally losing weight since gaining it constantly after becoming vegetarian.

Still using and enjoying this cookbook.

I figured out the pint issue: An Imperial (UK) pint -- which is used in the book -- is 568 mL or 20 Imperial ounces. A US pint is 473 mL, or 16 US ounces. US and UK ounces are also slightly different. So to convert an Imperial pint to a US pint, multiply by 1.2 (or add 20%). To convert UK pints to US ounces, multiply by 19.2. Better yet, just use the milliliters measure on the other side of your liquid measure.

Also, you'll need to have a kitchen scale, preferably one you can "tare" or "zero out". All bulk ingredients are measured in ounces and grams, rather than cups. This includes flours, powders, ground and shredded ingredients. I actually like this, especially with ground nuts and shredded cheese, since I can weigh out the amount before grinding/shredding instead of trying to guess how much makes a cup after processing.

The Vegetarian Low Carb Diet by Rose Elliot is excellent. To follow these recipies will bring kitchen creativity into your life and will begin immediate weight loss. Since beginning I am loosing 2 kilos per week which to me is just great as I NEVER feel hungry.

Also I am diabetic, before starting the Vegetarian Low Carb my sugar count (Australian) was around a horrific 18 to 23. After a few days on the diet it dropped to between 8 and 10.

My advice to all diabetics ...Chuck out the carbs. Now!

I am recommending it to everyone!

About the Author
David Nelson, born in 1938, was educated at Calday Grange Grammar School, Cheshire, and won an open mathematical scholarship to Christ's College, Cambridge. After postgraduate work in mathematical logic at Cambridge and Bristol universities, he entered the teaching profession. He has published papers in mathematical journals and is a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications.

Since 1981 he has been a Lecturer in Education at the University of Manchester specializing in mathematics education and the history of mathematics. His recent publications include Extension of Calculus and Multicultural Mathematics. He has lectured in Poland, Italy and France, and in 1995, at the invitation of the State Education Committee of the People's Republic of China, organised and led a three week National Seminar on Mathematics Education to initiate reform of the Chinese national mathematics curriculum.

His main recreations are playing the flute and piano, gardening and squash. His wife, Gillian is a writer and they have three small children.

Handy reference

This book is useful for anyone doing maths at college. It summarizes just about everything and is good as a quick reference to refresh your memory on something. (It is also fun just to page through, and look at all the wierd things that mathematicians have come up with). Another advantage is that if you are studying a section in maths that you are finding a little confusing or hard to grasp, the entry in this dictionary will give the important points. But don't expect too much detail, which I think is the main drawback of the book.

Really, really helpful!

Anybody who regularly does math on a more-or-less advanced level will delight in this book; it is exhaustive but managable (the size of a common pocket novel, really) and quite concise. Buyers should realize, of course, that books like these are not meant to learn you calculus or whatever; instead, it is more of a helpful hand when you need it. Now, what was that formula for partial integration, again...?

Decepcionante

El libro empieza mostrando que la escritora no ha escrito demasiadas cosas, los di�logos son muy casuales o suenan forzados, lo que hace que agarrarle gusto sea un poco dif�cil. Luego de esto ya que se entra de lleno en las exploraciones de Vinland, Markland y Tierra Verde la lectura mejora al grado de que el relato se hace ameno y muy disfrutable.

Es una pena que cuando lo "interesante" empieza el libro se desvirt�a totalmente. La escritora trata la tesis que m�s gusta a los europeos que es la que implica que todo "hombre blanco" era confundido con un dios. Y de ah� todos los nativos que van conociendo al personaje son sumisos, temerosos y por lo tanto ignorantes. Esto es una falta de respeto hacia esas culturas y para los que la queremos, es una tesis intolerable.

El trabajo hist�rico es bueno, se siguen los relatos de las Sagas Islandesas, de varias leyendas mesoamericanas y de mucho trabajo de las culturas Tolteca/Maya. Es una pena que la autora no haya invesitgado m�s el como se trataba a los extranjeros por los nativos, como por ejemplo a Gonzalo Guerrero que jam�s fue confundido como un dios sino m�s bien fue esclavo y poco a poco gan� estatus.

Acabo de terminar la lectura de Quetzalc�atl: El hombre hurac�n una interesante novela con buenos elementos hist�ricos acerca de la hip�tesis de la Dra. Lucie Dufresne sobre el posible origen n�rdico de uno de los mitos m�s grandes de la ancestral cultura mesoamericana: Quetzalc�atl: la serpiente emplumada. Aunque el estilo narrativo de la autora no es destacable, si lo son los muchos elementos hist�ricos con los que enriquece el relato y que nos permite conocer como era la forma de vida de aquellos antepasados remotos. �Nuestro M�xico siempre ha sido grandioso!

Great reading. Provides an interesting hypothesis of how ancient Mexico could be linked with such an apparently distant culture, that of the Vikings. Without thoughtful intention, my son was named after a famous Viking, while my daughter was named after a Mayan princess.

About the Author
Known by his simple and austere lifestyle, Fethullah Gulen, affectionately called Hodjaefendi, is a scholar of extraordinary proportions. This man for all seasons was born in Erzurum, eastern Turkey, in 1941. Upon graduation from a private divinity school in Erzurum, he obtained his license and began to preach and teach about the importance of understanding and tolerance. His social reform efforts have made him one of Turkey's most well-known and respected public figures during the 1960s. Though simple in outward appearance, he is original in thought and action. He embraces all humanity, and is deeply averse to unbelief, injustice, and deviation. His belief and feelings are profound, and his ideas and approach to problems are both wise and rational. A living model of love, ardor, and feeling, he is extraordinarily balanced in his thoughts, acts, and treatment of matters. Turkish intellectuals and scholars acknowledge, either tacitly or explicitly, that he is one of the most serious and important thinkers and writers, and among the wisest activists of twentieth-century Turkey or even of the Muslim world. But such accolades of his leadership of a new Islamic intellectual, social, and spiritual revival—a revival with the potential to embrace great areas of the world—do not deter him from striving to be no more than a humble servant of God and a friend to all. Desire for fame is the same as show and ostentation, a "poisonous honey" that extinguishes the heart's spiritual liveliness, is one of the golden rules he follows. Gulen has spent his adult life voicing the cries and laments, as well as the beliefs and aspirations, of Muslims in particular and of humanity in general. He bears his own sorrows, but those of others crush him. He feels each blow delivered at humanity to be delivered first at his own heart. is beautifully written and perfect for those interested in theology

Fethullah Gülen, the leader behind the Hizmet movement, recently wrote a biographical account of the Prophet Muhammad’s life and spiritual journey, as well as the characteristics of prophets throughout time. This project, titled Messenger of God, is beautifully written and perfect for those interested in theology, history, and Islam’s role in both. As an American non-Muslim, I was unaware of many of the iconic moments in the Prophet Muhammad’s life, such as his encounter with the Christian monk Bahira, his exemplary relationship with his first wife Khadija, his role as a teacher to those he encountered, and his confrontations with nonbelievers in Medina. However, I feel that I have as basic an understanding as a non-Muslim could have because of the fine details that Gülen paid in every paragraph he wrote. Every paragraph was meticulously written with a clear intention. In some parts of the book, Gülen simply wanted to convey his love and adoration for the Prophet. In others, he wanted to explain the aspects of Islam that are frequently misunderstood, such as jihad and polygamy. Gülen’s tone was so profound to me that I mentioned it to my mother, explaining that I found his book both informative and sincere. I would highly recommend the book to anyone who’s curious about Islam and the Prophet Muhammad, or seeks a better understanding of either.

Written by the famous Turkish humanist Fethullah Gulen- its a study of the Prophets life, of his companions, and of Prophethood in general. It is a long work- a joining of two volumes. All in all, it is a good book, a great deal of interesting information, although sometimes it gets a quite gushy and sentimental- using images of flowers, gardens, jewels, etc- although the style is generally elegant. The best parts were Military Dimensions of the Prophet's life (which bring to the front how incredible his military skills and planning), and Other Dimensions of his Prophethood (which illumine other aspects, such as his mercy, generosity, spirituality with clear examples). The Section on the Companions and Successors was interesting, showing how the early Muslim community was seriously and intensely set on scholarship concerning what the Prophet had transmitted. A good book, but unlike Martin Lings's famous biography and Qadi Iyad's Shifa, it may not be one I'll come back to.

This book deeply immerse its readers to the life of the Messenger. It is unique in its style.Rather than going over the chronological events, the book dwells into the character of the Messenger. It helps the readers to grasp the actions of the Messenger: how and why He acted in certain ways, what the context and cause of the events. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning how the Messenger lived his life.

About the Author

Afshin J. Ghajar is Regents Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, Oklahoma, USA and a Honorary Professor of Xi'an Jiaotong University, Xi'an, China. He received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. all in Mechanical Engineering from Oklahoma State University. His expertise is in experimental and computational heat transfer and fluid mechanics. Dr. Ghajar has made significant contributions to the field of thermal sciences through his experimental, empirical, and numerical works in heat transfer and stratification in sensible heat storage systems, heat transfer to non-Newtonian fluids, heat transfer in the transition region, and non-boiling heat transfer in two-phase flow. His current research is in two-phase flow heat transfer, thermal management of mini and micro systems, and mixed convective heat transfer and pressure drop in the transition region.

Dr. Ghajar has been a Summer Research Fellow at Wright Patterson AFB (Dayton, Ohio) and Dow Chemical Company (Freeport, Texas). He and his co-workers have published over 150 reviewed research papers. He has delivered numerous keynote and invited lectures at major technical conferences and institutions. He has received several outstanding teaching, research, advising, and service awards from College of Engineering at Oklahoma State University. Dr. Ghajar is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Heat Transfer Series Editor for CRC Press/Taylor & Francis and Editor-in-Chief of Heat Transfer Engineering, an international journal aimed at practicing engineers and specialists in heat transfer published by Taylor and Francis.

Yunus A. Cengel is Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Nevada, Reno. He received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Istanbul Technical University and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from North Carolina State University. His areas of interest are renewable energy, energy efficiency, energy policies, heat transfer enhancement, and engineering education. He served as the Director of the Industrial Assessment Center (IAC) at the University of Nevada, Reno, from 1996 to 2000. He has led teams of engineering students to numerous manufacturing facilities in Northern Nevada and California to perform industrial assessments, and has prepared energy conservation, waste minimization, and productivity enhancement reports for them. He has also served as an advisor for various government organizations and corporations.

Dr. Cengel is also the author or coauthor of the widely adopted textbooks Fundamentals of Thermal-Fluid Sciences, Heat and Mass Transfer: Fundamentals and Applications, and Introduction to Thermodynamics, all published by McGraw-Hill Education. Some of his textbooks have been translated into Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Spanish, Portuguese, Turkish, Italian, Greek, and French.

Dr. Cengel is the recipient of several outstanding teacher awards, and he has received the ASEE Meriam/Wiley Distinguished Author Award for excellence in authorship in 1992 and again in 2000. Dr. Cengel is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Nevada, and is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE).

If you've used any other Cengel's thermo textbook, you'll ...

If you've used any other Cengel's thermo textbook, you'll be entirely familiar with the formatting of this one down to the pictures at the edges of most of the pages to explain some of the more important concepts. Be very competent with differential equations, basic thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics, because winter is coming.

A life immortal !!

For the last 7 days, I have been reading the book "His Majesty's Opponent" relentlessly. It used to be on my office desk during the day, in my hand wherever I went and right next to my pillow when I went to sleep at night.

Sugata Bose has wonderfully captured a biography of Netaji's life, which today's modern world "HAS" to read. I have in the past wondered on several occasions, why our history books never had detailed accounts of Netaji despite the fact that he has been narrated as a great freedom fighter on various platforms?. This book answered that question.

I was always under an impression that Netaji was against Congress & the Mahatma, however I was taken aback as I read through this book. I was surprised that Netaji, at a ripe age of 24 when he was studying at Cambridge, on being selected as one of the very few Indians for Indian civil services decided to reject the offer and join Congress.

Much to my surprise, Netaji was an ardent follower of Mahatma Gandhi & Congress and he was actually elected as the president of Indian National Congress in 1938 & later in 1939. However it was his strong belief of giving equal opportunities to the minorities in India that led to the crack between him & Gandhi ji which only widened later. He was however viewed by the British as one of the biggest dangers for them and as such was imprisoned by them several times.

After being practically impeached by Gandhiji from the Congress presidency in 1939, Netaji was still committed to the Mahatma and Congress, however he got tired of being arrested and thought escaping out of India, might better serve his ultimate goal of Indian Independence.

In an absolute heroic escape from Kolkatta, Netaji fled to Europe and then subsequently traveled all across Europe & Asia garnering support and resources for Indian independence.

The amazing account of the creation of the Indian National Army(INA), the proclamation of provincial government in 1943, declaration of war by the INA against the British & America and the war trials and tribulations steered me completely.

Netaji's INA was within reach of their goal to reach Delhi when Japan suddenly faced the Hiroshima, Nagasaki bombings and lost the war. With his biggest ally gone, Netaji was left with no choice but to again retreat. While he was retreating to Tokyo, on 18 August 1945 at around 9:00pm local time, Netaji's plane crashed and he breathed his last in the hospital, while doctors fought a loosing battle to keep him alive.

However, even after several committees and investigations Netaji's remains were not brought back to India because it was never officially accepted by the government of India that he had indeed died. It almost choked me when I read the last few lines of the book that the bravest son of the motherland had been deprived of being buried in his free country.

Though the Mahatma had always opposed Netaji under the influence of Nehru & some other yes-sayers of Gandhiji, during partition when Gandhiji was pleading Nehru that the partition should not happen, the Mahatma agreed that had Netaji been alive, he would have not let this happen and that all his yes-sayers had now turned into no-sayers.

"In this mortal world, everything perishes and will perish, but ideas, ideals & dreams do not" these were Netajis words. Its a shame that even today the government of India has not given due credit to Netaji. They are still not willing to bring his remains back to India. However we can all keep his ideas, ideals and dreams alive. I encourage everybody to read this book and learn how a person born in a slave country dreamt and almost realized the dream of a "Free India" !!

An Excellently Written Biography and then some more ....

"His Majesty's Opponent ..." by Professor Sugato Bose is the definitive biography of Subhas chandra Bose (affectionately referred to as "Netaji" in the Indian subcontinent and much of Asia). He is the Indian nationalist leader who led a historic battle against the British Imperialist rule in India (India's freedom movement) throughout his life. His life and struggle is an epic, and all of it is more relevant in our world today more then ever. This was my immediate take away lesson after reading this biography.

The book stands out in the way the author blends a scholarly, impassive, objective history telling, yet kept the style simple enough to engage the reader on the life of Netaji. Tightly focused and amazingly readable for its size, I could read the book from cover to cover in an airplane and for the entire time I read this book, the powerful narrative kept me glued to the text. By the time I finished reading this book, I could feel that my life and perspective about my own country (India) underwent a change. Trust me.

In my opinion, this book is a classic, and I recommend you read it anyway whether you have heard about Netaji Subhas for the first time in your life (then you should really read it to gain an unbiased perspective) or not. It's obvious from reading the book that an unbelievable depth of research went to make this work. It's one of those books that will change your life after you read it from cover to cover. In my personal opinion, Prof Sugato Bose, the Harvard historian, and the son of Netaji's nephew is undoubtedly the best person in the world to write about him, and he has risen equal to that job. Easily, one of the "must-read" books in anyone's library.
