Useful Information - Conceptual Organization Lacking

This book contains much useful information on SQL Server 2005 T-SQL enhancements, but it regularly employs functions and constructs in its examples that are only explained in later passages. Specifically, when attempting to absorb a new concept by examining a code example, you must also contend with looking up items which have not yet been covered. This is a mild stumbling block but it hurts the flow of the book.

Also, the practice database (Asset5) did not attach properly (on my SQL Server 2005 STD edition install regarding appropriate permissions to modify objects) and the most direct workaround was: (1) To use the included, but unreferenced script to initialize the database and all its objects using a "new name" for the database (2) Attach the original database - Asset5 (3) Use the data import feature to populate the "new name" database tables (4) Drop the attached database Asset5 (5) Rename the "new name" database to Asset5. I did first attempt to modify the permissions associated with the login I was using - unsuccessfully...

By way of comparison I am using Oracle Press' "Oracle 9i The Complete Reference" by Koch and Loney as a standard of clarity and conceptual organization for PL-SQL. It is on this basis that I assign this book 3 stars, but admit that I have yet to discover a better book for advanced T-SQL topics. Please feel free to forward me better titles.

As an aside, Murach's SQL for SQL Server is the best introductory text I have found for T-SQL.

Helpful but needs improvement

In SQL Server 2005 Stored Procedure Programming, Dejan Šunderic describes practical uses of T-SQL stored procedures well beyond the level of coverage reached by most other books dealing with SQL Server 2005, including the book on T_SQL programming by Itzik Ben-Gan, et al. Microsoft's documentation, while thorough, is useful mainly to provide reminders when one already knows the the structure.

Šunderic describes some of the interactions between SQL Server 2005 and Visual Studio languages, including of course the SQL Server 2005 techniques for using these languages to write stored procedures, but also showing how to use Visual Studio 2005 as a debugger for stored procedures written in T-SQL.

It would probably have been helpful for many readers had Šunderic described the main access classes that the Visual Studio languages provide to reach SQL Server, that is, the SqlConnection, SqlCommand, SqlParameter and SqlDataReader classes. This topic is missing or barely mentioned in every current book on SQL Server and the .NET and Visual Studio technologies.

It would also been of use to many readers had Šunderic shown examples utilizing some of the key improvements in SQL Server 2005, for example generating lightweight cursors on table variables and implementing messaging. Both are likely to involve stored procedures. A messaging discussion almost starts in the final chapter, where Šunderic seems to be running out of steam.

Overall, Šunderic has written an informative and helpful book that substantially augments information available from other books and from Microsoft documentation.

This book is a great help for beginners or those transferring from the SQL 2000 to SQL 2005. Well-written and comprehensive with detailed guidelines for DBAs and developers, it helps answer any questions one might have in their day to day work with SQL server. You will find great tips and useful examples; a great way to expand your knowledge of stored procedures, new functions used in SQL 2005, and offers a means of combatting common errors. Highly recommended!

Thrilling Fae Story -Impossible to Put Down!

I absolutely loved the Underground Trilogy by Anna Kyss. It's a series about the fae and could be viewed as a type of origins story for the vampire myth. In a nutshell, the story involves an American student traveling abroad in London who meets twin brothers who were raised apart, one with each parent. One brother is considered light and the other dark and they must join forces if they are to cure the fae of the illness plaguing them for centuries.

Meghan Lewis did an outstanding job narrating all three audiobooks and they were impossible to put down! She really brings all of the characters to life giving each one their own distinct voice, both male and female. She also has a rhythm to her reading that is melodious, giving it a fairytale quality. In summary, Anna Kyss and Meghan Lewis together are the perfect pairing for hours of thoroughly enjoyable entertainment.

One of my favorite fantasy series. I found this series by being asked to review the first book's audio (which is a must listen if you like audio) the author does an amazing job of creating this world of fantasy right alongside the real world. If you are a fan of fantasy this is a great series for you. I love this series so much I keep it on my IPhone's kindle app so I can reread whenever the mood strikes me

Everything I use my iPad for came from this book

I got an iPad 2 for my birthday and didn't really know how I could use it...or why I would need to use it., and I didn't use it for about a month. I started flipping through this book, which shows that it can actually be a useful. It goes through all the basics of iPads--itunes, setting up email, using safari, games, dual cameras, video chatting.--but it also explains in lay man's terms everything that's new about the ipad with the new operating system. I've begun using iCloud. If it weren't for the book, I wouldn't even have known it existed, but it's a great tool. It also gives a lot of great tips that are really up to date with i0S5, including the functionality of the camera. I also learned a lot about how to download iBooks, which I have begun using a lot. A definite great buy for beginners or people who want to know how to use their ipad for new purposes.

This book made it possible to set up my IPad in a very short time, since I didn't buy it at an Apple store where they do that for you. It's dead-on with advice about apps, options, and things to avoid doing that can get a novice "stuck", since the IPad isn't as user-friendly as advertised. Like many of the other "Dummies" books like the one for Windows 7 and IPods, it's essential for ordinary people who aren't particularly adept at technology.

This is a great book for brand new users to the iPad and the "Tech illiterate". I bought it for my father in law who barely knows how to use a computer and once he started reading the book and going step by step on his new iPad that he got for christmas and he picked it up in no time. would recommend to anyone whose new to the iPad

Michael Alexiades is a New York City orthopedic surgeon at Hospital for Special Surgery and a professor and past Overseer at Weill Cornell Medical College. Awesome Book!

This is the author's first book, and what a great one. From the first chapter it is a page-turner. The character development quickly gets you invested in each one and you really want to know what happens to them. Also, the chapters are nice and short, which got me telling myself "just one more chapter before bed" over and over.

Being a physician, I found myself comparing many of the characters to ones that I know in real life. Though obviously a fictional book, the medical descriptions and characters bring an eerie realism that I rarely get from most other medically-based fiction books, movies or TV shows and I was able to maintain the suspension of disbelief, which is quire rare.

In all, a fantastic read that will keep you entertained and on the edge of your seat. I look forward to reading his next book.

This book was okay but obviously the author is not an English language scholar since his sentence construction is horrible and he doesn't seem to know the proper use of the the english language.

Excellent Intellectual Thriller

Riveting read - it was difficult to put down.

The novel is well written, reads fluidly, and continues to surprise. The tale of dedicated Demetri Makropolis is relatable, a hard-working young man searching for success in a competitive world. But don't get me wrong his story is very unique.

Academia collides with horror to cultivate an exhilarating story that sparks the imagination. If you're looking for an exciting read that will keep you captivated, "Night Harvest" is your answer. I still can't get over some of the author's writing techniques, well done.

Very fascinating and readable. Since I am rather lacking in funds, I have decided to stop buying books for a while, but after reading most of this in the library, I decided that it was a worthy exception.

Above average "new age" stuff

Thompson takes us on a rollercoaster ride through the origins of culture, sex, agriculture and patriarchy.He does not solely rely on left brain abstract thinking, but has got the right side of the brain working too.In other words, he is into mythopoeic thinking, which gets down to deeper levels of existence.If for nothing else, this book is worth it for the sentence "Myth is the history of the soul."There is much wisdom in this sentence.Thompson has more insightful things to say about myth than many other writers on the subject.If he has a fault, it is a too wide sweep over his subject matter.Nevertheless, he has many challenging ideas to confront us with.

William Irwin Thompson's curious work "The Time Falling Bodies Take to Light" was originally published in 1981. Due to the book's esoteric theme (in both senses of that word - "esoteric spirituality" and "incomprehensible"), its long shelf life and status as a classic are somewhat surprising, something Thompson himself admits in a new introduction to the 1996 edition. Even more surprisingly, "The Time Falling Bodies Take to Light" created quite a stir when it was first published. One particularly negative reviewer accused the author of being a closet Nazi obsessed with oral sex! Another claimed that he was, in fact, a feminist fellow-traveller. That's an accusation?

I've only read this book once, and I admit that I haven't completely assimilated it. This review is therefore a first attempt at coming to terms with Thompson's ideas. The author does have a spiritual worldview broadly similar to Theosophy or even the New Age. Thompson's life project is to bring together spirituality, psychology and science. He is perhaps best known as the founder of the Lindisfarne Association. According to Wikipedia, its membership list was pretty impressive, including Lynn Margulis, E.F. Schumacher, Wendell Berry and Gregory Bateson. And, of course, David Spangler! Leading U.S. Anthroposophist Arthur Zajonc is another former fellow of the Association.

"The Time Falling Bodies Take to Light" is an attempt to synthesize mythology, "real" knowledge about human prehistory and an esoteric worldview. Thompson doesn't see any contradiction between the three. Indeed, he says that history becomes myth at the moment when our worldly knowledge is found wanting. Our theories about prehistory will therefore necessarily be mythological, despite protestation to the contrary by Darwinists and others. However, myths can also be "true" in the sense that a myth is the history of the soul. It's not clear to me how true myth is to be distinguished from false myth. Perhaps it cannot, since "false" myths can have very real consequences, such as the myths of sociobiology. Thompson wants scientists and historians to become bold poets, weaving mythological narratives about our past in order the better to change the future.

The myths Thompson in some sense regard as true deal with the fall of spirit into matter and its subsequent liberation or resurrection. While incarnating in matter is in one sense negative, in another sense it's necessary in order to evolve a new spiritual being which masters both the physical world and the nebulous astral worlds, while being in touch with spirit above. Two things strike me about Thompson's chosen myths. One is that they really do sound feminist. The author imagines a primordial matriarchy already during the Palaeolithic, and associates the later domination of men with war, want, class society and "civilization". The kind of feminists who like to emphasize the Mother Goddess and similar themes, will recognize much of the material in "The Time Falling Bodies Take to Light", and Thompson apparently established a friendly relation with Marija Gimbutas. The other striking trait of Thompson's work is that he *does* sound obsessed with sex. There's more sex in this book than in "Game of Thrones"! The physical incarnation of man is intensely sexual, both metaphorically and literally. The author sees sexual imagery virtually everywhere, and connects this to kundalini, "the serpent power" or mysterious energy associated with the chakras in esoteric traditions. Of course, one of the chakras is associated with the reproductive organs.

Two things might be controversial with this bold reinterpretation of what our Stone Age ancestors were really up to. One is that Thompson seems to have an essentialist, quasi-biological view of men and women. While women might be "better" in some sense, their essentialist connection to sex, death and the hearth might strike more traditionally liberal feminists as regressive gender stereotyping. Thompson is also hostile to male homosexuality, pairing it with bestiality and incest, and viewing it as a form of anti-woman male bonding. The other theme that might be controversial (but perhaps to another kind of feminist) is that the ultimate goal of spiritual evolution is to create an androgyne. Indeed, Thompson regards many of the goddess figurines of the Neolithic as androgynous, rather than as purely female. Androgyny is also connected to kundalini: when the sexual serpent power reaches the head, a kind of spiritual "sexual intercourse" takes place between the raising kundalini (the phallus) and the head (the vulva).

Of the ancient cultures, Thompson regards the Egyptian as the highest (or "highest"), at least in terms of spiritual insight. The matriarchal cultures civilized the men but perhaps at the price of their manliness. Patriarchal civilization represents an attempt by men (or the masculine principle) to create a real ego rather than submerge in woman-centred collectivism. The Egyptian myth of Isis, Osiris and Horus strikes a balance between the genders and the two opposing forces in the universe (with the destructive or "evil" force represented by Seth). It also points to a balance between the physical and the spiritual, since Horus is said to be both, a divine being with a physical body. Thompson points out that while Egypt was a patriarchal society, the shift from matriarchy to patriarchy wasn't as violent in Egypt as in other regions. This is probably true. In fact, Pharaonic Egypt seems to have been at least semi- or quasi-matriarchal. Of course, Thompson doesn't literally regard Egypt as the "highest" or "best" civilization - it's simply the case that the evolution of consciousness (which must pass through several different stages) reached a kind of zenith in the Egyptian mystery schools.

But what should we *do* with all this esoteric knowledge? Here, Thompson is unclear - perhaps deliberately so, since his purpose isn't to propose a concrete political program, but rather to call for a new myth transcending the various programs. As already noted, he wants the scientists and scholars to become poets who re-enchant the world with new myths about our cosmic purposes. We have to reconnect with Isis (and, I suppose, Osiris and Horus). If not, another goddess will automatically fill the void: Lilith, the demonic spirit who dances in the ruins of cities. Civilizations that can't emancipate themselves through spiritual means, will be "emancipated" by default by Lilith. In plain English, they will be destroyed... Thompson warns that the meaning of the myth of Lilith will become apparent as the 1980's progresses. Here, he was off by a couple of decades, but what does that mean in the bigger scheme of things?

I'm not sure how to rate "The Time Falling Bodies Take to Light", and I admit that I still don't understand the title, but since I understood at least part of the point, I gracefully bestow three stars upon this, William Irwin Thompson's magnum opus.

I enjoyed the story

I enjoyed the story. . .but I was slightly irritated how it ended. My fault really. I didn't realize it was a cliffhanger type of book. I don't mind short stories...as long as there is some king of resolution. Just a heads up before you start reading. You are going to want to pick up the next book to find out what happens. This one just teases you and leaves you wanting more. All and all though the characters are good and I look forward to seeing what happens in the next book.

This is the first book I have read by Karen Erickson and I am so glad that I already have the next one.

Three best friends, Reagan, Natalie and Andrea were all nurses that needed a break and Vegas was it! They saved for a year and were ready for some wicked fun for the weekend. When they finally made their destination they still did not have their luggage but they needed to go out. So a shopping trip was the best choice...they didn't expect it would change their night.

While shopping they met a stranger named James that promises a party they would never forgot with famous men. He knew they were perfect for what his clients and his friends had in mind. The girls didn't know if they could trust him but once he threw out who he worked for Reagan was all too excited.

They were ready to get the night started. The night that could change their lives. Will they get what they are looking for? Was James the real deal?

I love that the three friends are real. They have debts, they are nurses and want to let loose for one weekend.

Great quick read with the promise of things to come...

This is the first book of Karen's that I've had the pleasure of reading. Although it is incredibly short it still manages to pack in a good bit of introduction to who the characters are and their personality traits that make them distinguishable. Our three hard working nurses and main female protagonists Reagan, Natalie and Andrea are off having a grand old time to themselves in Vegas when they come across a mysterious stranger in a clothes store who is about to help alter each of their love lives.
It's a witty quick read at this point and I get the feeling we're simply being set up for the bigger and better events to come in the next instalments. It's slick and precise in writing, there is no filler with endless monotonous descriptions of unnecessary things just a good rundown of the girls and the potential leading men that are going to storm in and sweep them off their feet as well as a good meaty hook to snare you in the form of reformed bad bay actor Declan who takes an instant shine to one of the vacationing ladies. If you're looking to suspend reality for an hour and lose yourself in the world of 'what if you met a real life film star' with plenty of thigh clenching sexual tension then Wicked Weekend is the place to start. I cannot wait to see where this yellow brick road is leading us.
