NOT WHAT YOU WOULD EXPECT

First off, the title is called "Drawing Bishounen" which basically means how to draw a handsome male. But this book is about 98% how to draw Yaoi. (Not that I have a problem with it, but I wanted to learn how to draw guys).

Second, most of the book is nothing more than photographs of models. (Actual People) It looks more like a magazine than a how to draw book. The photography is intermediate at best in most photos.

And Third, there is very little on actaully drawing males. There is a few pages on hands, feet, and facial expressions...but that is about it. I was very disappointed.

If you're looking for a book on how to draw a male...this is not the book for you. Even if you are looking for how to draw Yaoi...It's still not the book for you, unless you like to look at photographs and try to copy those into a manga style drawing with no guidence what so ever.

Alright, but mostly just pictures

I liked this book well enough, but it's not what i'd thought it would be like.
There's a short introduction part where it shows how to draw the male figure a bit, but then it jumps straight to the pictures and stays that way for the rest of the book. There are two japanese models (fitting, if you consider that's where the term 'bishounen' comes from but a little variety would have been nice) for the whole book and it's just not what you'd think when you look at the cover.
When learning to draw you need more than just a barely-there basics and a bunch of pictures, after all, and considering the cheapest used book of this (right now; when i bought mine it was much cheaper) is at around 45$ I'd definately look at other books that have more instruction and less random posing.

If paired with Drawing Yoai, perhaps a misnamed set (18+)

This book contains a quick tutorial on how to construct the human male figure, with several good tips on how to correctly cartoon one...but it isn't anything you won't pick up in any of the other "How to Draw" books. The diagram of bones and muscles with the ones you are most likely to see articulated on the nude figure is pretty helpful.

Mostly this book contains photo reference for poses.
These can be helpful and there are a wide range of poses and interactions included. The first half of the book contains solo figures (one or two of a figure undressing) and a pair interacting in horse play and some snuggling. The second half contains some more sexually charged poses and kissing available clothed or in underwear only. A few are far more sexually explicit than the name of the book implies, while not being pornographic necessarily you could view it as having been intended for pornographic reference, so I would recommend this for consumers over 18 or for an older teen with parental supervision/permission.

It really isn't a reference on how to create a character, which was disappointing to me when I first bought it, but it does show how to correctly utilize photographic reference without exactly copying it when creating an illustration and would provide someone who wasn't familiar with that a good learning experience. I have used some of the more explicit reference to create illustrations of heterosexual and lesbian couples as well so it is a handy all purpose reference and nice to have around when you experience a bit of art block.

If you want a book on creating dynamic characters and using props to further plot and characterization you should check out the Drawing Yaoi book, it should frankly have it's title swapped with this book ~ How To Draw Manga Volume 42: Drawing Yaoi (How to Draw Manga) (v. 42)
If you are interested in creating a full yaoi centric story, pick up both as a set.

Very well made book, nice print and bonding, with many lovely black and white illustrations.
Great value for a little book.

I just completed this excellent work by W. Dale Compton, and enjoyed the entire experience. Compton provides excellent insight into diverse manufacturing organizations, their modern challenges, and engineering and managerial strategies for success. The book was written for engineering professions, and is essential for mid-level engineers making the career transition into executive management.
The common theme of book is based on solid engineering principles. There is no "fluff" or "filler" included in the text. Compton clearly illustrates realistic constraints and defines effective techniques for corrective action. I was very impressed with the manner in which Compton reiterates the value of accurate data collection, cross-functional teamwork, and the norms of manufacturing and engineering professionals. The author clearly has experience in core operations and manufacturing. I also appreciated his in-depth analysis and examples presented in each chapter appendix. I would recommend this book highly to any career manufacturing professional as a core desk resource.

A genealogist's dream come true

If you can trace your family back to colonial Massachusetts from 1620-1633, you will find these books very helpful. There are biographical sketches of many (not all) of the early settlers of Massachusetts. I did find one typo in my set--one page where a sentence cuts off in the middle, above the bottom margin, and the next page has a new title. But the books I received were new, still in their shrink wrap. Nice quality hard covers, paper, and bindings. Not all of my ancestors are there, but a lot of them are, so I've really appreciated the biographies. The book spines and covers don't say what part of the alphabet they cover, so here's a list:

Volume I covers A-F (Daniel Abbott through Samuel Fuller).
Volume II covers G-O (John Gage through Francis Onge).
Volume III covers P-W (John Page through William Wright).

Each volume is preceded by a Table of Contents, How to use This Book, Key to Sketch Headings, Key to Titles (of the numerous bibliographical sources). Volume I includes a section on the scope of the work, including criteria for inclusion, how they constructed the sketches, documentation and citations, and Julian v. Gregorian dating. It also includes a list of sources for the historical information. Volume III includes an index to all three volumes, and an appendix with some very brief additions for all three volumes.

This set does not cover the early settlers of Newbury and some of the other towns in Essex County. For that, you have to buy another set that covers just the years 1634 and 1635. It's in 7 volumes; you have to buy them individually, not all are easily available, and they're way more expensive than this set--between $50-$80 each.

The author, sponsored by NEHGS, has written a comprehensive 3 volumne genealogical document of everyone known to have lived in New England between 1620-1633. This book brings many well know sources together for a researcher. Its a 'must have' for anyone with roots in New England!

I really enjoyed this book. I've torn away from Wicca a long time ago, but I was in a dark tunnel, tumbling across random books then reading them. This book is immensely encouraging, and I recommend it to everyone.

I love how the author so willingly explained common misconceptions and exposed the perversion of important esoteric beliefs.
I love how the author exposed true Wicca
I love how the author gave me other books to help me spring into the occult correctly.
I love this whole idea of this book. It's extremely important. All too often people like me delve into the occult, yet we are still in the dark and run risk of running into wrong situations. I enjoyed now this in no way tried to make me afraid.
I love how the author was well-read on many things.
I also enjoyed how the author kindly informed possibly naive people from entering a dangerous situation. That ran a little long, but too often people go into a ill-intentioned situation with good intentions. I think the coming out of the broom closet section was a little long, but it reminded me that people can be dangerous out of fear.
I wish the author would have gone into a few things a little more.
I couldn't find anymore books by this author, and I'd love to read more.
This is sort of a guide. And it's great. It pretty much handed me the flashlight I direly needed while I wandered through the dark tunnel of occult information.
I loved this book so much I am going to re-read it and set a plan for my studies.
I would really enjoy this author writing a book on starting meditation and actually practicing the occult.
The simple and kind writing style really encouraged me.

Ok but has its issues

For the most part I enjoyed this book, it was an easy read, and I feel that it at least gave people a good look at non Wiccan spirituality. It does have a few issues though and a couple little nit picks however. This is why I rated it at three rather then a four. My biggest issue is that the first 6 chapters are all about wicca. In a book that is trying to teach people about non-Wiccan spiritual paths I would think that Wicca would only be mentioned here and there, not have the first 6 chapters devoted to it. Its not a big issue but I just felt it was odd. Other then that it has a few grammatical errors and such, but over all is done well. The other issue I had was that very little is mentioned about Satanism, so if you're a satanist, like myself don't expect a whole lot of information on it. The only mention of Satanism is of course LaVayen.

There is some good information in it

It's an alright book. There is some good information in it, and then there is some bad information. For example, the authors irresponsible label of Huna as traditional Hawaiian when in fact it is not Hawaiian or traditional to the Hawaiian people at all. Huna was created by a professor who is not from Hawaii and brought in New Age practice into his interpretations of some old ideas. Take this book, like any on the Occult, with a grain of salt and research rather than accept everything as fact.

Great book so far

I think the book is great. I bought it for my soon to be 3rd grader son. Our public schools aren't reaching cursive anymore (very disappointed) so I bought this book to introduce him to it over the summer. I'm giving it 3 stars for now because we just started but it sure helps teaching the importance of how to place your hand properly and provides lessons practicing how to create the loops and connect letters.

Good Starter for Kids

I got this for my daughter, since she is not learning cursive at school. It was a great way for her to get started and she really enjoyed writing the "special" notes to Santa and her best friend. Definitely recommend it for kids just starting out.

We have gotten so much information and enjoyment from Marcia Williams' signature style; this book is no exception.

This overview of the mythology of Ancient Egypt also includes the reigns of some of the more important Pharoahs -- your children will have a more complete understanding of ancient Egyptian culture after reading this book.

"Ancient Egypt:Tales of Gods and Pharoahs" is so entertaining, you may even forget it's educational.

Beautiful illustrations, including a 4-page foldout and a 2-page foldout. Marcia Williams has an oddball sense of humor that we find very appealing.

Another Brilliant Comic Strip Mythology by Williams

Reason for Reading: I love mythology, Egyptian Mythology, and this series of books by Marcia Williams.

Typical of Marcia Williams' books this is set up in a comic strip format with the narrative told underneath the strips and funny, comical asides coming from the characters depicted in the cartoons. The most popular tales are told here in a fairly linear order so that one story leads onto the next with the exception of jumping many years to Cleopatra at the end. The book begins with the mythology of Ra, Isis, Thoth, etc and goes on to tell the tales of famous pharaohs Hatsheput, Thutmose, Tut, Cleopatra, etc. So the book isn't entirely mythology, though myths do surround some of the Pharaohs. Williams' artwork is beautiful as usual and the book includes two spreads where the pages unfold outwards to create large panoramic scenes. One thing that is missing, from her other books, is the usual detailed framed artwork around each page; here she has simply framed each piece with what look like papyrus plants. An added plus though, is along the bottom of each page is a continuous ticker where a cat tells a running commentary on interesting facts about Egyptian life: the role of cats (of course), agriculture, mummies, inventions, etc. A gorgeous book when all said and done; the tales are a good selection for an introduction to Egyptian mythology and pharaohs.

These myths are for history lessons, not bedtime or casual picture book reading

My middle school aged sons and I are studying Egypt, including Egyptian religion and mythology, and so checked this book out from the library. Yes it is very colorful, but some of the sidebar animations detract from the main story AND I question her target audience. I mean, it's animated like it is for young children but do young children really need to be reading these stories? These are NOT family-friendly fairy tales! To prove my point, here is an excerpt from the story titled "Horus the Avenger":

Seth was Pharaoh of Egypt, but the crown really belonged to his nephew, Horus. Seth decided to kill him, as he'd killed Osiris, Horus' father. Horus was still a child and guarded by his mother, Isis, on a floating island. One night, as the island bumped against the banks of the Nile, Seth crossed onto it. He took the shape of a scorpion and crawled into Horus' room where he stung him.

All night Horus screamed as Isis tried to heal him, but by morning he appeared dead. The wise god Thoth comforted Isis and reassured her that she would see her son again. Horus had passed into the Duat, but only so that his father, Osiris, could prepare him to fight Seth and avenge their deaths. Horus remained with Osiris until he became a man and was ready to meet Seth in battle.

Amen Ra took Horus to the land of the living in his sacred boat. Seth was ready and waiting. He charged at Horus and aimed a bolt of fire into his eyes. Horus was blinded and unable to fight back. He roared with pain and anger. It was many weeks before Horus regained his sight and could go after Seth again.

Every time Horus thought he had his enemy cornered, the wily Seth escaped. So Horus gathered a great army and chased Seth up the river Nile. When they reached the island of Elephantine, Horus saw Seth standing there in the form of a vast red hippopotamus, uttering a terrible curse.

The wind raged, the waved rose, and blackness fell over Egypt. Only the boat of Horus gleamed in the darkness as the gigantic hippopotamus opened its jaws to crush him. Quickly, Horus took the likeness of a giant youth. He drew back his arm and cast a long harpoon. Horus threw it with such force that it traveled through the roof of Seth's mouth and into his brain. The red hippopotamus sank dead into the Nile, the darkness vanished, and the people of Egypt rejoiced at the victory of Horus the Avenger. Peace came to Egypt, and Horus was crowned pharaoh. . . . . End of Excerpt
