This is a scholar work to look at the domestic and foreign policies on China. It showed how the West Coast mainly California anti-Chinese sentiment fired up to Congress to pass the Chinese Exclusion Act 1882. But Secretary Hay made a declaration of 1899 China Open Door Policy for equal opportunity for all foreign powers in China. This book compared and contrasted American policy in US and China.

It showed how the Chinese and American played politics on economic terms. The San Francisco Chinese allied Chinese in China and around the world to stage a boycott. The unpleasant treatment to H. H. Kung, the future China's finance minister and Dr Sun Yat-sen was mentioned in the text. On pages 70 - 71, it also related a group of students from China to study at Oberlin College. They were delayed a year waiting for the certificates. a student remarked "that it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a Chinaman to enter the United States".

This book also showed business, labor, religious and racist groups joined in the pro and con legislative influence.

Reading this book helps understand the past and current relationship between China and US, especially in terms of politics and economics.

Great Story

Pauline Gedge is such a talented writer. I've only read two of her books so far, this and The Scroll of Saqqara (a/k/a Mirage), and I'm so impressed with her ability to paint a scene.

This book is so nicely written, it is a joy to read. It was, for its time (it was originally published in 1977) considered historically accurate. It is the story of Hatshepsut, daughter of Thutmose I, of the 18th Egyptian Dynasty, as it was known in the 1970’s. Hatshepsut must have been an extraordinary child; she certainly was an extraordinary adult. When she was a teen, her father proclaimed to the court that she was to be his successor, but instead, she wound up queen and wife to his son (by a concubine) the ineffectual Thutmose II. Thutmose II died young, leaving Hatshepsut with a daughter and Egypt with a son by a concubine, the child Thutmose III.

Hatshepsut, as was typical and acceptable in Egypt, remained in power as regent for the child king, but then later she declared herself king (there was no word in the ancient Egyptian language for “queen” either as the wife of a king or as a female ruler) with the young Thutmose III as her junior co-regent (there were numerous instances of co-regents in Egypt, but they were typically father and son). She is urged to have Thutmose III killed, but she refuses. He gains power; and she knows her time is limited.

However, over the years, we have not only learned a lot about ancient Egypt, but we have also learned how gender-biased earlier theories were. For instance, this book holds with the old belief that Thutmose III hated Hatshepsut and objected to a female overshadowing him, and he couldn't wait to kill her and take over Egypt and destroy her monuments. Hatshepsut actually lived to a ripe old age, by ancient standards, and there is no reason to suspect anything other than a natural death.

More about Hatshepsut for those interested: Her great successes are shown in the book. There are records of her leading a military campaign in Nubia, but most of her reign was peaceful and prosperous. She built or repaired temples across Egypt. She sent explorers to find the long-lost, fabled land of Punt; they returned with amazing riches and reestablished trade for luxury goods to be brought into Egypt. And, of course, she built the most amazing and beautiful sight in all of Egypt: her mortuary temple at Deir el-Bahari. She was, all in all, a great ruler and her reign was very successful.

Various Egyptologists, Peter Dorman to name one in particular, have proven that Hatshepsut and Thutmose III coexisted quite peacefully throughout her long reign. Immediately after her death, he completed several monuments she had started, leaving her name and image intact, and leaving images of the two of them together with him as the subordinate. He did usurp some (but not all) of her monuments, but not until about 20 years after her death and his full succession. He was hardly the first or the last pharaoh to do something like that (Ramesses II recut monuments and put his name on just about anything he could). Thutmose III may have simply desired, at the end of his life, to absorb her reign into his, or there may have been a dynastic dispute as to who would succeed him (I always thought his son, Amenhotep II, comes across as an arrogant, incompetent jerk), or there may be other reasons we don't know about.

But all the evidence is that Hatshepsut nurtured the young Thutmose III and supported him; she just remained the primary king while he was junior to her. Why that happened, we don’t know, but she certainly could not have claimed the kingship without support of the court. To later generations, she may simply have been remembered through Thutmose III’s and Amenhotep II’s propaganda as only a regent to the child king. The fact remains that she could have had Thutmose III done away with at any time, and she chose not to.

There were several other female kings before and after Hatshepsut, but she is simply the best known. There even exists a Second Dynasty inscription (reign of Nynetjer, if I remember correctly) that proclaims that it was decided that a woman could become king. Hatshepsut, in fact, was the last (for a while) in a long line of very prominent and powerful women. I’ll just mention one: her great-grandmother, Ahmose-Nefertari, the long-time regent for her son, was still depicted by his side until her death, many years after he reached adulthood. She was deified and worshipped as a goddess for several hundred years.

One thing that was quite unknown when the myth of his woman-hating vengeance was originally created was that Thutmose III built his mortuary temple subsidiary to Hatshepsut’s. It was so badly destroyed, it was until quite recently believed to be a ruined part of her temple. I don't see the logic in him building his temple in that location if he hated her.

Still, this book is beautifully written and a lovely story. It should just be kept in mind that it's fiction and not history. It tells much of the tale of a glorious ruler, although it gives her a sadder end than she deserves.

African Epicness!!!

If you love ancient history, especially the wonderful Egyptians, then this book is just what you need. What it lacks in characterization it makes up for in sheer fun. A fast read, and though it can hardly be faithful to history, Hatshepsut is just as one might imagine her to be: lovely as the dawn yet cold as the night, drawing you into herself yet keeping everyone at a distance. I feel so much more could have been done with her character, as her relationship with Senmut left much wanting, but the book was already long enough since it covered her entire lifetime. The story did get maddening at times and required more than normal suspension of disbelief, but it was absolutely fun, the detail was exquisite, the battle scenes well drawn, and the characters were full of life. Gedge is a wonderful writer. This is my first book of hers, but I will definitely be reading more of her.

Good story, but the digital transformation was a bit rough

I read this book at least 15 years ago, and it still holds up on a second reading. Recent discoveries in Egypt undercut some of the premises, but the overall story is still compelling. Hatshepsut is one of the more interesting figures in Egyptian history, being both female and pharaoh, and Gedge is masterful in taking the bits that we actually do know about her (for example from what still exists on the walls of her temple) and weaving them into a cohesive fictional biography. She puts in a lot of details about ancient Egypt without making them sound like a lesson or a guidebook.

It does look like the the original was scanned and not copy edited. There are many errors, such as periods in the middle of a sentence, using one word when another was clearly intended (most hilariously, Gots for Gods a couple of times.) Still, worth the price.

Highly recommend for people interested in ancient Egypt.

About the Author
Mike Peng is the Jindal Chair of Global Business Strategy at the Jindal School of Management, University of Texas at Dallas. A National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award winner, Professor Peng is a fellow with the Academy of International Business and listed among Thomson Reuters' The World's Most Influential Scientific Minds. His recent research awards include the Journal of International Business Studies Decade Award (2015) and the Academy of Management Perspectives Best Impact Award (2014). He holds a bachelor's degree from Winona State University, Minnesota, and a Ph.D. from the University of Washington, Seattle. Prior to joining UT Dallas, Professor Peng was on the faculty at The Ohio State University, Chinese University of Hong Kong, and University of Hawaii. In addition, he has held visiting or courtesy appointments in Australia, Britain, Canada, China, Denmark, Hong Kong, and Vietnam. This award-winning professor is widely regarded as one of the most prolific and influential scholars in global business, and he has garnered many research grants for his work. The United Nations and the World Bank have cited his work in major publications. Truly global in scope, his research focuses on firms' strategies in diverse regions such as Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, and North America. He has published over 120 articles in leading academic journals and authored five books. Professor Peng has served on the editorial boards of the Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Journal of International Business, and Strategic Management Journal. • Parts Two and Three explore the principles of tertian harmony as they pertain to common practice, stressing learning by doing. After each new concept is introduced, several pages of carefully graduated exercises are presented.
• Part Four surveys the important harmonic procedures of the twentieth century. The author also emphasizes the exposition of theoretical procedures rather than focusing on individual composer's interpretations of them.

About the Author

Barbara Bennett is a Lecturer in the Department of Music at the University of California, Riverside, where she teaches a three-part series of classes on harmonic theory. A composer and pianist as well as a teacher, Dr. Bennett is active in the College Music Society and the National Association of Composers, USA (NACUSA), having served as an officer on both national boards. Besides harmony, she also teaches Advanced Music Fundamentals and Introduction to Western Music at UC Riverside. She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music at the University of Georgia, and her D. M. from The Florida State University.

I'm not as enthusiastic as the previous reviewer. I have taught music theory at all levels for 17 years, and while there is good material in Spencer's The Practice of Harmony, there is much that seems downright peculiar. If your theory professor assigns this book, of course you've got to use it; otherwise, much of the material is presented more clearly in other sources. The problems are twofold: reliance on standard theoretical concepts divorced from practice or context, and Spencer's attempt to either explain concepts in new ways or offer shortcuts in learning or remembering the concepts--it's a laudable effort, to be sure, but one which leads him astray.

Take, for example, this wonderfully abstruse line from his "Suggestions and Strategies" for learning triad quality: "If the root of a triad is natural and the fifth is flat, or if the root is sharp and the fifth is natural, or if the fifth is double-flat, the triad is diminished." (p. 69) All that may well be true, but if you've memorised that and still can't tell that the third of the chord is minor and the fifth is diminished, you have no recognition of what a diminished triad IS. There's quite a difference between naming and understanding, and Spencer ignores this.

Another and much more significant problem occurs with Spencer's explanation of the minor. Frankly, he doesn't seem to understand that there is not a "harmonic minor key" or a "natural minor key"--he does not use the terms, but in the section "Triads in Major and Minor Keys" (p. 68) he shows the triads first on C major, then on A minor (natural), a minor (harmonic), and a minor (melodic)--ascending only. Now, while there are SCALES in these various forms of the minor, they represent quite different things from the triads that are found in most common practice period music. Even triads built on the harmonic minor scale, with a triad of III+ (augmented) do not reflect the actual triads in most music--III is much more commonly found in the music as a major triad than as an augmented one, regardless of the theory. Minor is a complex situation, not easily explained; but a piece is in a minor mode which uses the various forms of minor--melodic for the melodies (mostly), harmonic for the harmonies (mostly, except III), and in Classical music, almost never natural--purely a theoretical construct because of the key signature linkage with the relative major. Natural minor in Classical music occurs as the descending form of the melodic minor. The real problem is that the minor scales are all theoretical constructs and not reflective of the music--the issue is how to handle scale degrees 6 and 7. To solve this, rather than address it directly, Spencer introduces yet another theoretical construct, the 'synthetic' minor scale, made up of a combination of all the other forms together. It's an appalling idea, one I've never seen elsewhere, and totally without context. Spencer would have been better served by introducing the minor mode in its own chapter, rather than trying to tack it on as an appendage to the major mode.

Lack of context lies at the heart of Spencer's approach, and to be fair this is true of far too many theory books. Instead of discussing the basis of functional harmony in the Classical Period, for example, we get the same tired "Primary Triads in Root Position". I'm of the firm belief that discussion function of chords--Dominant preparation for ii and IV, Dominant function for V and vii, Tonic for I and Tonic substitute for vi in major--is much more useful than listing all the "rules" of doublings, etc. Similarly, cadence types are named, but the functions of the various types are not described.

All in all, Spencer's approach in The Practice of Harmony is an odd combination of pretty standard pedantic theory and new, sometimes confusing approaches. Theory is really nothing by itself; without a musical context it is meaningless. Yet Spencer never attempts to provide such a context; indeed, he uses not a single example from actual music literature. You are better served elsewhere.

Very simple Language! pretty comprehensive! but not very deep

I am a mathemaician!! and I am studying this book along with two other books ( the shaping of music by Russel and Elementary harmony by Ottman) to hopefully write music!!

This book as the other reviewer said doesn't have exmples from literature but at the end of each chapter as exercises it referes you to designated pages from three other books that contain examples in literature. Here I should say the book covers the material in a rather easy language much easier! somehow more clear than other two books that I am reading!

In the book (page 261) says that borrowed chords are nearly always appear in the major key! while obviosly, in minor keys the chords: I ( picardy third) and ii, IV ( in melodic minor when 6 is raised) are not unusual.

I guess we have still a long way to see a good book in harmony. something real practical. But for now, i guess if you want to learn harmony by yourself you should read maybe several books!!

Very Good Book!

It is an excellent book of harmony.It has a great number of exercices.The only thing that i got worried about was the very FEW examples concerning the contents of the book, but if you read carefully you will understand what the author wanted to say!But i still wish the author included more examples of the contents , mainly about the Four-part writing. Anyway, i really enjoyed the book and i am learning a lot from it!
