Eye-Opening

I never understood before. My mother's whole family is a nest of narcissists. It was tough growing up. I'm nothing like them, I take after my father's side of the family. It was so bizarre. It was like they (figuratively) liked to "bathe in people's blood". I just could not, for the life of me, figure out why someone would want to. I mean, come on already. How can they possibly WANT to hurt someone? To slice and dice and just cut somebody to pieces. I simply could not ignore the evidence of my own eyes, but it all seemed so unreal. I was just a child, I was innocent and helpless. They were so vicious, they spat venom, they bit and snarled and ripped and ground and stomped and kicked and screamed and slashed and growled and spat and glared and howled and scratched and punched and slapped and flung and smacked and would not stop and blamed everyone else and loved every minute, every second of it. Their eyes would shine, their cheeks and foreheads were so, so pink, they would, I don't even know what you would call it, they would giggle-snarl. (It was decidedly an unpleasant thing to hear.) They... drooled. You knew when they were going to start in, because they would start drooling. Just a little bit, in the corner. Drool. I started understanding a little bit when that song came out when I was a teenager, "Anticipation". Whenever I see someone drooling, or unfairly jumping all over someone, I can still hear that song. I never liked that song. I stopped liking ketchup for years because of that song.

Thanks for this book. I am understanding for the first time what motivates this impossible behavior. It's still ugly as sin, but I'm gleaning a bit of why, which I just never had before. Thanks.

Fuel is "spot on" with what narcissists do and why they act like they do. Written by a narcissist, it gives great insight as to why and what goes on in their devious minds. I found it so in tune with my own experiences. It's amazing how you know they are up to no good, but once you read why and what they are thinking, it's a real revelation. Thanks to the author for sharing his world.
Having been in a "relationship" (if there is such a thing with a narc) with a narcissist for 6 years I have to say this book is very enlightening and again it details situations very much like ones I had with my narcissistic boyfriend and now I know why he did the things he did and even more importantly what he gained from it. I had several "wow" moments while reading this Fuel and I found it extremely interesting. This is a must read if you have been involved with one of these individuals and you are the least bit curious what makes them tick or, even worse, how the negative emotions they evoked in you were giving them the most benefit! Our suffering is their best fuel! Read Fuel and don't be their fuel!

This is the Best Book Ever Written About Chess Training

I wish this book was written 25 years ago. It is the only book ever written about chess training to give a complete syllabus of what skills you need to know and how to put in the hard work to acquire them. Soltis's underlying theme is "Too Much [chess] Information" (TMI). We all suffer navigating the jungle of TMI. Soltis provides us with a hatchet, a GPS, and direction -- he provides us with outlines for hard work, how to use books, how to use computers, etc. For example, we learn how to spar with computers, how to read over master games, how to train our planning skills, how to study the opening. All facets of chess training are covered. It's a remarkable book.

Chapter titles and some of the more important topics covered include the following:

Chapter 1: Chess Isn't School
Chapter 2: Cultivating Your Chess Sense
Chapter 3: The biggest Study myth
Chapter 4: The Right Way to Study Openings
Chapter 5: Two-an-a-half-move Chess
Chapter 6: Overcoming Endgame Phobia
Chapter 7: Learning to Live with TMI
Chapter 8: How to Learn More from a Master Game

Some Important Topics in the Book:
Take away at least three lessons from each game (wins and losses).
Examine interesting positions (especially endgames) with a sparing partner (friend or computer). Later in the book Soltis goes into more detail about sparing strategies for endgame positions.

Only about 25 exact endgames need to be known, up to master.
Candidate moves / relationship planning.
How to study annotated master games. Three iterations required.

Soltis relates each of these concepts to an overall training plan. He recommends which specific books or computer technique to use with each training exercise.

With an incredible sense of chess history and an entertaining story-telling style, Soltis explains how famous players used one or more techniques in their own training. His ability to put these training techniques into context makes the book extremely fun to read. A few annotated games compliment the text, but they're not necessary.

I imagine that good students will take away a single page of detailed notes about how to train all aspects of their game. Then they might start to think that most chess DVDs, chess books, and chess magazines are useless, that only a handful of chess books are required to make master. This book, as the manual of manuals, by all means is one of them.

Helpful and Up to Date Guide

With the hundreds of books available on improving your chess rating, an overview by a good writer has been long overdue. Soltis is a great chess writer, and does an excellent job of outlining techniques to balance study, given the information overload on the topic. In extensive reviews, we've found 5 typos, which is unusual for Batsford, one of the finest chess publishers, most likely due to the rush to get this to press. We would have added a bibliography with a book of this title, there is none, and the "solutions" look like an afterthought-- they are 8 sentences on half of the last page!

Contents include:

1. Chess isn't school
2. Cultivating your chess sense
3. The biggest study myth
4. The right way to study an opening
5. Two and a half move chess
6. Overcoming endgame phobia
7. Learning to live with TMI
8. How to learn more from a master game

TMI refers to Too Much Information, and the biggest myth is that you should "think like a grandmaster." Soltis convincingly argues that you ought to do a lot less thinking and a lot more pattern recognition (instinctive and intuitive) of good and bad moves!

Improving your rating is not easy, and to be honest, this book isn't either. It is not just tips, but a good number of annotated games to illustrate key points, some of which require 5 or six travel sets or a good couple screens of computer analysis to work through. It is not nearly as difficult as an outstanding but very tough Secrets of Creative Thinking: School of Future Champions 5 (Progress in Chess) text, but isn't for beginners either, and makes numerous advanced and subtle points. If you are an advanced beginner or middle level club player, there are humorous anecdotes that tease you away from buying 50 pound opening encyclopedias and studying them extensively.

The praise for the book includes the fact that it is "up to date with the most modern computer techniques." Well, it is up to date, for sure, especially in game examples and subtle tips, but there is not even a chapter on computer chess. There are several short sections on the topic, which are well written and give practical tips (Cyber Sparring, 4.5 pages, is the largest section), but no details on loading engines, comparing Hiarcs with Fritz, etc.

Some of the best tips are secrets from the old Russian training schools. They include:

1. Study alone, not with, or exclusively with, a teacher or trainer
2. Practice numerous games against computers and slightly higher AND slightly lower rated players
3. Don't go beyond having fun to the point of getting discouraged or overloaded
4. Don't shy away from memorization
5. Study a lot of endgames, not just for endgames, but to see the tactics at work
6. Play a lot of brief, trick, puzzle and exercize games. A large number of new and unusual exercises are given in this category.
7. Learn analysis, and try it before reading the analysis of others. (Soltis follows his own advice, giving 240+ diagrams, and asking you "what would you do here?" before continuing the analysis)

If you are new to chess, ideas like correspondence chess, reading the Informant, playing black often, practicing "blind," and many other techniques are described. Even advanced players will likely find some novel techniques from the Russian school that they hadn't tried before.

With the number of really BAD chess books published each year, this one stands out as much better than the rest. At 13 bucks or so, it will save you a hundred bucks on wasted money buying extensive opening libraries if you haven't done so yet, and that alone is worth the price! The author likes Logical Chess: Move By Move: Every Move Explained New Algebraic Edition, and quotes it as "the best book for a novice." I personally love books with good bibliographies for additional reading, and although there is NO bib here, Soltis does give tips throughout the text for suggested reading. These tips seem directed mostly at beginners. Beginners will profit from this book, but the analysis and examples are tough enough, and require enough work to follow, to benefit medium club level players as well.

Studying Chess Made Easy?! Definitely more productive!

I received my copy of "Studying Chess Made Easy" just a couple of days ago. I already own several books by Andrew Soltis.

"The Inner Game of Chess"
"The Art of Defense in Chess"
"Pawn Structure Chess"
"The Wisest Things Ever Said About Chess"

I have thoroughly enjoyed "Studying Chess Made Easy." Of the three dozen or so chess books I've already purchased this year, this is easily the best chess book of the year for me.

I am not a rated player. I've never payed in a tournament. I'm 50. I'd like to play in tournaments eventually and become a master level player. I loved chess in my youth. Dabbled here and there for decades. Recently, my love for chess has been rekindled.

What I am is an avid chess enthusiast. I'm an older player who wants to improve. "Studying Chess Made Easy," is a misleading title. I don't think the study of chess can be made easy. But it sure can be made more efficient and productive.

This book wil not teach you tactics, strategy, opening theory, endgame theory, etc. Instead, it offers practical help on how someone who wants to improve and who is working without a coach can improve in all of the important areas of chess mastery.

I put this book in the same category as Jeremy Silman's books "The Amateur's Mind," "How to Reassess Your Chess," and "How to Reassess Your Chess Workbook." Soltis's latest book is very different from them in terms of coverage. But, in terms of practical guidance for improving your chess, "Studying Chess Made Easy" really expands how you think about the study of chess.

I often buy a book because I appreciate a small portion. Somewhere inside, there is an idea that's expressed in a way that I want to be able to visit again. This book has given me several ideas to revisit and keep my chess studies productive and fun.

Soltis exposes readers to the Russian word "priyome." That idea alone was worth the purchase price to me. It's my guess that "priyome" is a word that will become more familiar to chess players. We're all familiar with mate-in-two, mate-in-three positions. Those focus on combinations. A "priyome" is a positional response to game move rather than a combinational response.

There is so much more to "Studying Chess Made Easy" than just introducing a new piece of Russian jargon. You will learn how to avoid information overload, how to improve your chess analysis skills, how to studying openings and endgames efficiently, etc.

This book will not teach you strategy, tactics, openings, endgames, etc. I'm confident that improving chess players will find it to be an essential companion to more productively studying chess.

I give this book my strongest recommendation.

Personal and obscure facts about the women, Henry's relationship with his nobles, and quirks of the times enliven the text. Genealogical tables for all the families involved are included. This book can be used for research, as it contains a wealth of information. Weir (the genealogical Britain's Royal Family--not reviewed) here uses the many public records and personal letters of the early 1500's to offer a comprehensive, factual version of the tempestuous private and public lives of Henry VIII and his six wives. The story is dominated by Henry and the devolution of his character from an ``affable,'' ``gentle,'' and gifted (he wrote poetry) lover, soldier, and ruler into a porcine, paranoid, impotent old man who was exploited and manipulated by courtiers and women, some of whom he imprisoned, beheaded, or hanged. Henry's brother's widow, Catherine of Aragon, six years the king's senior, became at 24 his first wife. Thirty years later, she was set aside for the ambitious ``virago'' Anne Boleyn, who was in turn beheaded to make room for the gentle Jane Seymour, who died in childbirth and was replaced by the repugnant and scholarly Anne of Cleves. Soon, Anne was retired for Catherine Howard, a 15-year-old ``empty- headed wanton'' who, despite Henry's passion for her, was executed- -along with three alleged but innocent lovers--and replaced by the king's most ``agreeable wife,'' Catherine Parr, who narrowly escaped execution herself for religious quarreling. Vowing in marriage to be ``bonair and buxom/amiable/in bed and at board'' and to produce heirs, Henry's wives illustrate to Weir, through their pregnancies, miscarriages, and infants' deaths, both the profligacy of nature and the dependence of political power on sexual prowess. One of My Favorites Each Time I Read I Read It!

I love this book! It is the first book I read authored by Alison Weir and it remains my favorite. When I first held the book in my hands my first thought was, "This is a pretty big book about 6 wives of one king. I really hope this is going to be interesting and not a dull recount of facts and dates". When I finished the book I knew that anyone with even a passing curiosity about history would have found this to be an amazing book to read. Yes, there were facts and dates galore but presented within a story that was absorbing, engrossing, and entertaining as well. I found that while reading the book it was most helpful to me to have my laptop next to me so that I could pull up images of the locations being discussed in the book. This added an additional level of enjoyment because this enabled me to see exactly what the author was describing in the book. I could see the actual paintings that were brought up in the book as well as portraits of the people. Not only was I sad to see the book come to the end but I was launched into a search to read the books that were used for reference and research purposes. I have read this book several times by now and when I saw the book come up on a Amazon Deal e-mail, purchasing it for my Kindle has now enabled me to literally have the book at my fingertips to read wherever I am.

Weir or Fraser?

What’s Great: the writing, which makes this book a delight to read. Weir paints each wife with color and depth so that we come to know them across the centuries: the “staunch but misguided woman of principle,” the “ambitious adventuress with a streak of vengeance,” the “strong-minded matriarch,” the “good-humored woman,” the “empty-headed wanton,” and the “godly matron” with a weakness for “handsome rogues.”

Why I don’t give this book 5 stars: because I don’t know how much of the information I can trust. Weir is a novelist who embellishes her narrative with colorful flourishes that make for excellent reading, but which may also distort the actual events and influence our perceptions. Saying that Henry stomped off in a huff is certainly more lively than saying he left the room, but unless his emotional state is corroborated by witnesses, Weir’s depiction is artistic license rather than documented fact. It’s also sometimes hard to tell when Weir is presenting her own conclusions and when she is relaying what she’s found in source material. When she writes that Henry wanted Elizabeth “kept out of his sight” after Anne Boleyn’s execution, is this her interpretation or what a contemporary actually observed? What also makes me question Weir’s interpretations is that I don’t always find her explanations convincing. For example, she postulates that Jane Seymour’s delay in conceiving was probably due to Henry and his “advancing infirmity,” as evidenced by the fact that his later wives bore no children. We can never really know why it took Jane several months to conceive. She could have had irregular menstrual cycles. Henry’s physical condition in 1536 was very different from his state in the 1540s, and any impotence there may have been during his later years would not necessarily have afflicted him earlier. The reasoning just seems flimsy to me. Lastly, some of Weir’s information is not corroborated by professional historians, making me question her analysis and assessment of sources.

Still, I can’t deny that I enjoyed reading this book, and found it accurate enough (that is, the information matched what I’ve found in other books) to recommend. For reading pleasure, I put it ahead of Antonia Fraser’s book of the same title, but Fraser’s is the one I believe. She seems less prone to presenting her opinions as facts and offers more plausible explanations for her views than Weir.

Alison Weir is awesome

I never get tired of reading any of Ms. Weir's books. This one is just as great, with many details of his life that I didn't know about. Great read, great drama, lots of drama in fact when it comes to this dude. No wonder he is still fascinating hundreds of years later. What I find intriguing about that whole time period is that the more things change the more they stay the same. The same drive for power, money, influence, sex, religion and fame back then is alive and well today. I can only giggle at the thought of Henry on Twitter. "Anne is the best", "Anne betrayed me". "The Pope sucks", "I am the best there ever was", "I love a good wedding, don't you?"

A Crazy, Funny, Nightmarish Future, right here in Toronto.

I follow Maia Sepp because I enjoy her writing style - easy, flowing and often very funny - and because her subject matter is refreshingly different. The story line in "Wake," as in "An Etiquette Guide to the End Times," is bold and challenging: Climate change. A techie world gone mad. Revengeful hacks, spies and lies. Relationships. Immigration nightmares.
I got caught up with Camilla Brightly's multiple difficulties and rooted for her. I worried about her. With her I felt the longing for some place that was hers, a place to which she belonged - home. Home: and then came memories of her dead mother which were powerful. Her father whom she loved dearly, gone - all the way to Greenland among melting ice sheets. News of him added to her worries and foretold a future nightmare for everyone.
While some might find the subject matter slightly on the dark side, the future a little bleak, the story is told with wonderful humour.
There are scenes that are hilarious, suggesting that everything might not really be so dire after all.

On another note, I found the scene with the Toronto Police Department pitch perfect - oh how I related!

Wake is a must read!

‘Wake’ is the prequel to ‘An Etiquette Guide to the End Times’ a soft sci-fi series by Maia Sepp, and humouroulsy gives us a peek into the future of “smart appliances” and how we may not be able to ever be un-connected. Sepp’s easy and humorous writing style makes for a great read. The book follows Camilla Brightly as she navigates her job, an internet hacker, and her car - which seems to have a mind of its own, all while keeping tabs on her father and trying to hide from her refrigerator! It’s a must read!

Another terrific book from the incomparable Maia Sepp! Like her first title in this series - An Etiquette Guide to the End Times - Camilla is a charming heroine struggling to deal with life's various curve balls and making hilarious mistakes. A fascinating look at what the future might hold for us all, including menacing refrigerators and, you know, the looming end times. A gem of a prequel.

Good Primer On Trading Options

This a good book to read if you are thinking of getting into trading options. It covers all the basics and beyond, providing a firm foundation without spending a lot more money on some of the expensive option courses out there. After reading this you will not likely be ready to start trading straight away but will be in a better position to continue your education without spending a lot of money. This is a beginner to intermediate book, unlike Stock Market Options Trading Education which jumps in at a much higher level.

This is an easy read and highly recommended for people not in the know!! Well worth the money I spent...

Very basic but good for beginners

I borrowed this book on my Kindle. It was a quick read. I do like the way the author explained the basic concepts. The charts and technical trading introduction was quite useful. Now I know where to focus my interests for technical analysis. However the options part was very basic. The author did mention in the beginning that this was a quick introduction and other books need to be referred for a more thorough understanding. This is true.

Overall a good read. People with basic options knowledge need to look elsewhere.

Good training to prep for a Zoo breakout

A real page turner!!!! Couldn't put it down as I sat in my bunker, counting ammo and canning food. I have a suspicion that this book is a cover for some kind of Bigfoot capture op, but not sure. Interesting how the East German team took a lunch break in the middle of the competition - must be due to the lack of an incentive system. Sad to read about how the wife of one of the competitors was making fun of the shooting skills of her man and made the comments to another competitor...............I've been there, but on the other side - the pain is the same.

This book is quick read, I found this it informative and exciting. As a hunter and long range enthusiast, the idea of this challenge is very appealing. I felt like a participant as I read the narrative and looked at the pictures. The photos were amazing for detail on the tools of the trade and for capturing the incredible terrain. For anyone interested in long range shooting, I highly recommend this book. I would give this 6 stars if Amazon would let me.

A true delight written by a true professional.

Vowinkel really knows his stuff. I was transported back to my glory days of working with my RGR BN Sniper Teams. It helped that this book is loaded with great pictures that puts me in the field with the competitors. However, this is not a book for the Yahoo-Rambos out there. The author has too much respect for the competition, tools of the trade, safety, and people involved for that and it comes through in this book. A true delight written by a true professional.

California Walking

Harryette Mullen turns California walking into crisp, sunny little lyrics. It's a joy to explore nature with her. I like picking this book up from time to time and digesting just a few 'tanka' stanzas at a time.
