About the Author
Geoffrey M. Cooper is Professor and Chair of the Department of Biology at Boston University. Receiving a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Miami in 1973, he pursued postdoctoral work with Howard Temin at the University of Wisconsin, where he developed gene transfer assays to characterize the proviral DNAs of Rous sarcoma virus and related retroviruses. He then joined the faculty of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School in 1975, extending these studies to the identification of oncogenes in human tumors. Since moving to Boston University in 1998, Dr. Cooper has used The Cell in teaching undergraduate cell biology, as well as continuing his research and participating in a major expansion of the life sciences there. Dr. Cooper s research is focused on understanding the roles of oncogene proteins in the signaling pathways that regulate cell proliferation and programmed cell death. He has authored two textbooks on cancer and published over 100 research papers in the field of cell signaling and cancer research. Robert E. Hausman is Professor and Graduate Director of the Department of Biology at Boston University. Receiving a Ph.D. in Biological Science from Northwestern University in 1971, he pursued postdoctoral work with Aron Moscona at the University of Chicago, where he investigated cell cell interactions during early embryonic development and characterized one of the original cell adhesion molecules. He joined the faculty of Boston University in 1978, extending his investigations of cell surface interactions to muscle development and regulation of gene expression in the developing nervous system by cell-to-cell contact. Dr. Hausman has taught undergraduate cell biology and several graduate development courses at Boston University, and Professors Cooper and Hausman currently teach cell biology together. His research is focused on understanding how interactions between cells and between cells and the extracellular matrix affect differentiation and morphogenesis.

Great Book, written by a great guy!

The class I took with this book was written by the author, Dr. Geoffrey Cooper himself. Before I say anything else about the book, Dr. Cooper is a super smart guy. He discovered the ras oncogene, which you'll learn about in this book! (He is also a notable humble guy, as he doesn't even mention himself in the book, while he gives you tons of stuff on other scientists who discovered great things in cell biology, and even got Nobel prizes).

This book is a great book for an undergraduate class in cell biology. The diagrams are all well-drawn, and the book explains some complex concepts/cascades quite well. Studying the diagrams and illustrations is very very helpful when studying.

Additionally, the text is pretty comfortable to read. The text isn't crammed in together, and everything is organized pretty well (you usually don't have to turn the page to see a diagram the text refers to).

I kept this book after the class, as it is a great reference, and easy to understand. It's well-written, concise, and interesting.

Be thankful if your class uses this book. You'll not only learn about cell biology, but a lot about science in general.

Interesting, although the author explains only part of the history

Well, I read this book after viewing Job's lecture at Stanford […] really fascinating. So I would know what was happening behind the scenes, and what went wrong on the love story of Jobs and Sculley.

The book explains Sculley's East Coast (and Republican) vision of how to manage a big company, which, is, essentially, I may say a "military" way to organize a company, with clear objectives and responsabilities, vs. the West Coast (and Democrat) which is more cooperative and less organized. Of course you cannot manage a multimillion company with the manager deciding on everything, from the profile of the programmers to hire to the marketing budget.

It explains also the big mistake Sculley (and others have done) when trying to emulate the Sosa wars, with IBM-PC vs. Macintosh. A consumer may just pick one Pepsi on the shelves of a supermarket, and test it, and eventually switch brands... An IT Manager simply cannot do that, and its amazing that people as smart as Apple Board of Directors didn't see this. Anyhow, since then Apple has profiled his public and they did not try to compete with PC clones anymore. They aim their sales to a prospective buyer who is not the IT Manager anymore. Probably this is not a decision done by Jobs when returning to Apple.

What the book says is not as important as what the book hides, probably the fact that not all companies are created equal, and there is no such thing as "one size fits all". Probably Sculley was the right man for the job in a certain moment, but sure Apple under his management would have become a "me too" company, as Hewlett-Packard is now. Of course I prefer the panache of DEC trying to convince the world to follow their way - although they did not suceed - to the Compaq-HP deal, manufacturing dull machines with dull O.S.

I read Odyssey because Sculley was considered an expert on marketing. On that topic the text does disappoint the reader; he’s an exceptional person who will teach you techniques, such ideas as “Marketing as Theatre” that we take for granted today.
John Sculley was an executive, who steered Apple Computer through the turbulent waters of the 1980’s who came from Pepsi. Yet, there’s an interesting soap opera in book. John Sculley helped oust Steve Jobs from Apple in the1980’s, but it was Steve Jobs who recruited John Sculley to come to Apple Computer in the first place. Who said computers were boring?

Fascinating view into the Sculley vs. Jobs battle

When the author relates the story of being lured from Pepsi to Apple, and the introduction of the Apple Macintosh, this book is fascinating. When John Sculley inserts sections about management styles, it can bore you to tears; just skip them, nothing noteworthy in the management sections anyhow. It was fun to read this book several years after its publication, with the added depth that passage of time provides. A must-have for those interested in the early history of Apple.

About the Author
On April 19, 2005, CARDINAL JOSEPH RATZINGER was elected POPE BENEDICT XVI and became the 264th successor to Peter as the "Vicar of Jesus Christ." Beginning in 1981 he spent over 20 years as the Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, a role often depicted as the "defender of the faith." Cardinal Ratzinger was also President of the Pontifical Biblical Commission and of the Preparatory Commission that codified the new "Catechism of the Catholic Church," published in 1994.

Concise Summary of Mariology

"Daughter Zion" is a remarkably brief but thematically expansive look at the doctrines of the Roman Catholic Church concerning Mary. Cardinal Ratzinger stays true to form, summarizing a vast amount of knowledge in what amounts to an apologetic tract on Marian belief.

There are two main parts to the work. First is the analysis of Mariology from a scriptural basis, which comprises the "working backward" from the New Testament to the Old, and the "working forward" from the Old to the New. It is the latter that is more impressive. Cardinal Ratzinger does a great job explaining and defending the typology that equates Mary to Judith, Esther, Sarah and others. In the process, he effectively dispatches the notion of the Church as a patriarchy or as somehow hostile toward women. Fundamental are insights related to the special role of the "barren" woman as being simultaneously "blessed." Cardinal Ratzinger likes to point out the paradoxes or inversions that permeate Catholic belief, and he has certainly found an excellent one to highlight.

The second part of the book delves further into the developed doctrines of Mariology, particular the Virgin Birth, the Immaculate Conception, and the doctrine of the Assumption. Ratzinger has the easiest job with the Virgin Birth, utilizing his earlier points concerning the barren/blessed typology. In his discussion and defense of the Immaculate Conception, he reaches the crux of his work, in a humbling and inspiring passage: "This correspondence of God's 'Yes' with Mary's being as 'Yes' is the freedom from original sin. Preservation from original sin, therefore, signifies no exceptional proficiency, no exceptional achievement; on the contrary, it signifies that Mary reserves no area of being, life, and will for herself as a private possession: instead, precisely in the total dispossession of self, in giving herself to God, she comes to the true possession of self. Grace as dispossession becomes response as appropriation. Thus from another viewpoint the mystery of barren fruitfulness, the paradox of the barren mother, the mystery of virginity, becomes intelligible once more: dispossession as belonging, as the locus of new life"

Unfortunately, the book ends with a rather disconcerting defense of the doctrine of the Assumption, which seems half-hearted and raised disturbing questions for me. Either I am poorly catechized on this topic, or Cardinal Ratzinger walks very close to impeaching the extraordinary magesterium. He separates the historicity of the assumption from the theology of the assumption, and equates the doctrine to "the highest form of veneration" in affirming emphatically the sainthood of Mary.

Now, for those who recognize saints, and that God is the God of the living, not of the dead, there will be little argument about the sanctity of Mary. But it seems to me to be most dangerous to imply that an article of the faith such as the dogma of the Assumption is a sort of "good will" gesture of the Church, and with a wink & a nod we tacitly acknowledge that there is no historicity to the doctrine.

I have probably misread and misunderstood this last part of the book, but I subtracted one star from the rating due to the fact that this most perplexing section was also the rather abrupt ending of the entire work.

Overall, however, though remarkably brief, this little book is dense, thoroughly documented, and reflective of the erudite Cardinal Ratzinger's immense learning and penetrating intellect.

It’s 1996, and Mark Vincent, senior special agent of the Washington Bureau of Intelligence and Security, has been assigned the task of assassinating the head of a terrorist organization in Europe. When the mission goes south and he’s ordered to take a vacation, he reluctantly goes to Paris, where, in a little bar called Le Petit Homme, he sees a man who intrigues him. However, like ships passing in the night, they go their separate ways, only to meet again the following morning, and over breakfast, the man introduces himself as Louis.

Is it too much of a coincidence? Perhaps, perhaps not, but Mark is intrigued and, unable to resist, he gives his name as Rick. A comment of Louis’s leads Mark to assume Louis hustles for a living, so Mark decides to “rent” him for the week. Unbeknownst to Mark, Louis has his own reasons for going along with the charade, which leads to… the start of a beautiful friendship.

short story that leaves me wanting more

This is a great short story that has enough characterization and storyline to feel complete and leaves me wanting more.

Mark is a secret agent and gets delayed for his new mission by bad weather. When he gets to the scene of action, his partners are dead and dying. He vows to avenge his fallen partners but his boss tells him to take a vacation and cool his head. He goes to Paris, undercover, and encounters another man as intriguing as himself and with just as many secrets.

There is definitely sufficient background on Mark that I can connect with him. Sometimes, he's a regular guy who's uncle has cancer and is trying to come to terms with losing him in the future. Other times, he's a dangerous undercover agent with a reputation that precedes him. The best part of the story is reading through Mark's thought process and actions on how he stays undercover while spending his vacation with a rent boy.

I love how much I've come to know Mark's character is such short pages. The writing also flows smoothly and the story itself is not a dark, heavy read. I would definitely check out the other books in the series and see if they measure up to as good as this short story promises

This book offers a concise survey of British politics in the postwar era. Now in a substantially expanded new edition, the author extends his exploration of the debate over "consensus" up to the present day. "Consensus politics" is the notion that for approximately a quarter of a century after 1945 there existed a broad measure of agreement between the major political parties about the role and objectives of government and the fundamental bases of policy, domestic and foreign. David Dutton examines the development of postwar politics and the ways in which it has been interpreted by historians, political scientists and politicians alike. He argues that after 1970 the consensus looked instantly fragile, and shows how it gave away to a new style of politics in Britain. He also examines how the 1990s saw an emergence of a new consensus under John Major, rising out of the ashes of the old.

The new edition, containing fully updated further reading, continues to provide an excellent overview of postwar British politics and the consensus debate for all students of politics and contemporary history.

About the Author
David Dutton is Senior Lecturer in History at the University of Liverpool and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. He is the author of Austen Chamberlain: Gentlemen in Politics (1985) and Anthony Eden: A Life and Reputation (1996).

He begins with an account of a recent tour of specialty bakeries in Paris, including Gosselin, where he learned to make the young baker's unique pain l'ancienne which, Reinhart says, would be better called pain moderne, as it uses a modern invention (the refrigerator) to produce a "cold-dough delayed-fermentation" baguette, the best he has ever tasted. Classifying the types of breads and presenting ingredients in tables helps the baker understand relationships and commonalities among seemingly dissimilar breads. Reinhart covers only yeast breads except for a single recipe for a triumphal cornbread full of fresh corn and topped with bacon. If a cook can do the math, Reinhart's tables of bakers' "percentages" allow for adjusting the recipes to any model bread machine, and the truly expert may use the numbers to create wholly new breads. Background and Techniques Very Good; Recipes Run of the Mill. Best for Beginners and Early Intermediates.

As an introduction to bread making, theory and practice, this book is very good, one of the best I have seen. This is where Reinhart's showmanship and didactic style shine. That is about the first 100 pages. Reinhart is now mainly a teacher. I would recommend the theory and practice section without hesitation to the beginner bread-maker or the intermediate wanting to go back through for a very good teacher's view on bread. Reinhart's knowledge of all things bread-making (practice and art for yeast breads) is excellent and he has a very clear communication style. It seems like that the first 100 pages of this book on theory and practice that won the book its two awards.

The breads themselves are... well... uninspiring. The breads can't compare in complexity and texture to the kind of stuff you get baking in a dutch oven with Chad Robertson Tartine Bread or Ken Forkish Flour Water Salt Yeast: The Fundamentals of Artisan Bread and Pizza. The side notes in the Reinhart recipes are often interesting, whereas the results are not --at least not to my taste. I like the hard, crumbly crust, large air pockets and complex flavor of the Robertson and Forkish breads that are baked in dutch ovens. I was disappointed by Reinhart's naturally leavened breads (my bread preference) in comparison to Forkish or Robertson; which is somewhat understandable, since this books is targeted at a wide audience and artisanal naturally leavened bread is a niche. Also, Reinhart's bottle spray and pan of steam water does not solve the moisture problem of baking in a home oven without steam. For the most part Reinhart's yeasted bread is 'just like all the others' to me: good, but not compelling enough for me to keep the book.

I sold my copy of this book. I knew after trying 4 of the recipes (two of them twice and one three times) and comparing them to other books/authors, this would not be a go-to book for me. Reinhardt does have some nice innovations like using a soaker and making Anadama bread over 2 days, which is an improvement over the traditional 1-day method, so if you have a favorite bread, you might find Reinhart's take on it interesting.

Because the book is mostly about basic method and technique, not the recipes, I don't want to discourage anyone looking for a good beginning primer on bread from picking it up. If you enjoy baking with Peter Reinhart, just remember this is a 'get-you-started' book. There are better books (and authors) for intermediate and advanced bakers with what I believe are superior methods and results.

Having worked through three Reinhart books, I think this is the best Reinhart book overall, since there is more technique and background knowledge, which is Reinhart's strength. The photos are quite good (and plentiful) and the steps are completely and painstakingly described. Reinhart's whole grain book that followed this book feels like pretty much the same book substituting whole grains, with a more abbreviated instructional section. Mr. Reinhart's thinking, communication style and graphics in Bread Baker's Apprentice have advanced from the book prior to this book, Crust and Crumb: Master Formulas for Serious Bread Bakers, making Crust and Crumb kind of obsolete [there are no photos in that book, only drawings]; not worth buying if you already own this book. However, I have retained my original copy of that book because I like a couple of the recipes.

I found that I outgrew the Bread Baker's Apprentice sooner than I thought I would. The Bread Baker's Apprentice feels like the kind of book that tells you how to make some number of breads and covers techniques as they relate to each bread. It does not feel like the kind of book that builds true mastery of technique in the way that Chad Robertson's Tartine Bread does. If what I had wanted was a good step by step on how to bake a stable of breads, then I would have been satisfied with the book.

In summary, I think the Bread Baker's Apprentice is a good first look at bread making. If you are new to bread baking, read it at the library or borrow the book from a friend for the first 100 pages and the embedded notes in the recipes, perhaps reading it a couple times over, and trying some of the recipes, copying those you try and like. If you want an easy desk reference for baking a stable of good quality breads, then by all means buy it. If you are more serious about bread, I recommend instead purchasing first Flour Water Salt Yeast: The Fundamentals of Artisan Bread and Pizza and then when you want to advance further, Tartine Bread. If you want more recipes after that, there are many competent bread baking books with reliable (and good) recipes [my choice would be Jeffrey Hamelman's Bread: A Baker's Book of Techniques and Recipes] or search the internet.

If you're looking for the tastiest,most wholesome bread products look no further this is it. Yes, Reinhart uses starters and the recipes often take 2 days to complete, but trust me, it's worth it. Coming from Brooklyn NY my family has always enjoyed the simplicity and joy of a simple buttered NY seeded Kaiser roll and a good cup of coffee for breakfast. We came across a German Kaiser roll recipe which I've been using and it is really as close as you can get. I'm 85 and we still haven't given up on trying to find more special recipes. Reinhart is the answer with bread and cinnamin buns and sticky buns. We made his Kaiser rolls and everyone in the family who tasted them were ecstatic as you just can't find a tasty seeded Kaiser roll anywhere. When you buy seeded Kaiser roll in any store beit Walmart or Wegman's or whatever. It tastes like a piece of cheap american bread shaped to look like a Kaiser roll with sesame seeds on it. Yuck. We tried Reinhart's Kaiser roll recipe and it is out of this world fantastic. We tried NY bagels today and we made a batch for me. My wife has a gluten problem so we use special flour for her. We use Montana Farms NGM (non-genetically Modified flour). We're amazed as we started mom's recipe for Everything bagels, mine came out fantastic. Hers are looking very promising. Her flour generally comes close. I was busy outside in the garden as the dough was mixing in my Ankarsrum mixer(which is another out of this world machine for kneading dough.) I love Bosch tools and appliances but the Ankarsrum makes the Bosch mixer look like a toy when it comes to kneading dough. It kneaded longer than it should have but when we came in from the garden it was the most fantastic batch of dough we've ever made. The Ankarsum mixer is a new addition got sick and tired of our old Kitchenaid joke. We pulled a piece of dough off to give it the window pane test(on page 58 where you stretch your dough to test its readiness), if it's ready, it will stretch tissue paper thin, without tearing and literally allow light to pass through it like a stained glass window pane.Getting it right on the first shot amazed me as you generally have to add flour or water to adjust the elasticity and smoothness of your dough to get it right. Needless to say the bagels were fantastic, they just ain't nothing like an Everything bagel with garlic,onion cream cheese with chopped scallions on it to start your morning off. All Reinharts recipes offer flavor and texture like no other. Next we're onto English muffins tomorrow and Bavarian soft pretzels next then we hit the breads. This book is a gem full of out of this world recipes.The first time we made the Kaiser rolls we were pleased but not too crazy about making a starter ( Pate)each time. Each time we ate another of his rolls the flavor and texture was so phenomenal it just jumped out at you.
We will stay with his recipe and the extra step is more than worth it. The bread makes the sandwich no matter what you put in it. Even as my kids say there's nothing like a good buttered roll and coffee for breakfast. So enjoy this book. It is a treasure trove of flavor packed recipes.

Upped My Baking Game

Fabulous explanations and formulae. I've made the bagels and the challah and both turned out fabulous. Can't wait to add my own adjustments to them, as well as try some more of the more technical pre-ferments, poolish, biga, etc.
I am relatively new to bread baking. I've made white breads and rolls many time before and was looking for a book to up my game - this was it.

Not for a beginner

I was required to buy this book for a Computer Science class. Most of my classmates and I really hate it. We had to go elsewhere to really learn how to program in assembly. Brey does not give many good examples. I do not recommend this book for first time assembly language programmers. It might serve as a reference for someone who has previously coded assembly. I hope this helps!

Great for youngsters

I found this book very helpful and informative for my kindergarten class. It is both simplistic enough for them to grasp the information and stay "engaged" as well as, complex enough for children to learn several attributes of a starfish...and remember it! There is also a great activity supplied at the end of the book. It's been a winner for me at home and at school. Great for beginners to science.
