About the Author
Angelo DeNisi is Albert Cohen Chair in Business Administration and Dean of the A.B. Freeman School of Business at Tulane University. After receiving his Ph.D. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from Purdue University, Dr. DeNisi taught at Kent State University, the University of South Carolina, Rutgers University, and Texas A&M University before coming to Tulane. His research interests include performance appraisal, expatriate management, and work experiences of persons with disabilities. Dr. DeNisi's research has been funded by government and private agencies, including the National Science Foundation, The Textile Manufacturers Institute, and the Army Research Institute. His work has been published in top journals in the field. He has also authored or co-authored four books, contributed to other books, and has spoken at numerous national and international meetings. Dr. DeNisi has served as President of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology and President of the Academy of Management. He has also served as Chair of several SIOP committees and as Representative to the APA Council. He was the chair of both the OB and HR Divisions of the Academy of Management. His contributions to the profession have been recognized with awards from the Academy of Management, and The Academy of Management Executive. The SIOP has named him co-winner of the lifetime Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award. He has served on the editorial boards of AMJ, AMR, JAP, Journal of Management, and Journal of Organizational Behavior, and as Editor of the Academy of Management Journal. He is a Fellow of SIOP, the American Psychological Association, the Southern Management Association and the Academy of Management.

Ricky W. Griffin serves as Distinguished Professor of Management and Blocker Chair in Business at Texas A&M. He received his Ph.D. in organizational behavior from the University of Houston. He has served as editor of the Journal of Management and as an officer in the Southwest Regional Division of the Academy of Management, the Southern Management Association, and the Research Methods Division and the Organizational Behavior Division of the Academy of Management. Dr. Griffin spent three years on the faculty at the University of Missouri (Columbia) before moving to Texas A&M University in 1981. His research interests include workplace violence, employee health and well-being in the workplace, and workplace culture. Poor text for HR

This was the text for my HR class in 2003. I am pursing my Masters. I found the text to have good examples of HR practices however, to be unorganized in fashion. It was not an easy text to follow as it jumps around a lot. It also introduces many ideas and then tells the reader that it will address the idea in a later chapter. This was very distracting. The practice test from the website are very helpful.

THRILLER! THRILLER! THRILLER! a must read series

Caleb, Ling, Ahna and Sammy.... A mother worries about her children. What do you do when you see your child may have inherited his fathers demeanor? Seeing and talking to people who really aren't there. Once again, Kimberly takes you on highs and lows, making you hold your breath as you turn the page... Gasping!! Really?? OH NO!!!! Then it ends.... awaiting book 3 in this thrilling new series. She has done it again! Making us want more. Please hurry with book 3 so we can see what happens.

Seed of the demon

A complex tale of horror with a shared evil thread from father to son that never breaks. The spawn of the father’s inner demons works to possess the son as he tumbles deeper and deeper into madness. At least Ling, the mother, is sane and loving. Imagine what would occur if both mother and father were mad. The author hints she will show us when the final book of the trilogy is published. Hold on!

Shursen knocked another one out of the park

I love, love love this book! While it features many of the characters from "Lottery", one of Kimberly Shursen's previous novels, it could be read as a stand alone without a lot of confusion.

When Caleb disappeared after trying to kill Ling he left behind his daughter Ahna and son Sammy. Ling has moved on and put her life back together, but she hasn't told her kids much about their father. Around the same time Caleb returns to reclaim his family (unbeknownst to Ling) Sammy begins exhibiting some pretty disturbing behavior. Are the sins of the father claiming his son? I could hardly wait to see what was going to happen next and it was incredibly hard to put it down. I can't wait for the next book in the trilogy to find out what happens next.

Little is known about the life of the father of the modern novel. Like his contemporary Shakespeare, Cervantes fascinates because he is approached most closely through his writings. Here a professor at the University of Caen, in Normandy, offers a collage-like portrait, separating what is certain about Cervantes from the imagined and the plausible, placing him into his milieu, Spain's Golden Age, in the effort to discover "that ever-present absentee whose unmistakable voice we always recognize among a thousand others." Unfortunately, much of the book is speculative, raising more questions than answers. Canavaggio mixes tenses, sometimes using the past, present and future in one paragraph; the prose, while exuberant, is rambling. This is an ambitious, adulatory biography.

To the well-known biographical details of Don Quixote's creator--soldier, hero of Lepanto, prisoner of war, inept gov ernment worker, unhappy husband-- Canavaggio's popularized treatment offers no new discoveries. The author, a Cervantine specialist, eschews scholarly apparatus, the most glaring violation of which is the failure to follow up textual references with appropriate footnotes. The English translation not only lacks the stylistic fluidity of the 1986 original, but also excludes the genealogical tables and maps as well. Libraries that already own Francisco Navarro y Ledesma's Cervantes: The Man and the Genius ( LJ 1/1/73; o.p.) or William Byron's Cervantes: A Biography ( LJ 9/15/78) may find themselves already sufficiently served.

This is a biography not a novel

Actually I lied about the plot and the mood and all because I couldn't otherwise review this book. I haven't finished it yet but I did want to renew my acquaintance with Cervantes, the author of one of the best books ever, Don Quixote. The book is informative and it was originally written in French but it's not a page-turner like Don Quixote is. It tells perhaps a bit more than I wanted to know about the family of the famous author but it's OK. The author obviously took a lot of time to meticulously research the subject. I guess full of surprises because I didn't know much about the family history of Sr. Cervantes; but otherwise pay no attention to those words behind that curtain.

~I have just finished going through the book and I have found it to be very helpful and it does indeed go over a lot of nitty gritty things as the other reviewer stated. It is assumed here that you are already fairly good with verb tenses and that you have a decent vocabulary in the language, but that's expected... Like the other Spanish Practice Makes Perfect books I've gone through, this book has clear explanations followed by examples and lots of different exercises to help you practice what you've learned.

~I found almost everything to be helpful and organized, with hardy any noticeable errors(including the section at the back that has the answers to the exercises). There is one thing though about the last chapter that I wish would be changed a bit. It is not the content, but the way it is organized. The last chapter lists idiomatic expressions and is followed by exercises. Listed are the spanish expressions in bold and the explanations in english, but it is not in alphabetical order. This probably wouldn't bother everyone who goes over this section but I did like the expressions that were given and found I wanted to search for specific ones to see the meanings in english but had to keep flipping through back and forth and just would have found it more convenient if it was organized alphabetically.

~I'll go over some of the parts I liked the most or found the most useful:
~You'll learn how to phrase things in different ways, how to use conjunctions (practicing writing and reading sentences using words like : in spite of, despite, not only.. but also, however, otherwise, since, so, still/yet, therefore, when, while, for, both... and, either...or/neither...nor, besides, although, though, and, as, etc).

~Also a section on some/any and other determiners like when using algunas vs. unas, cualquier(a), poco/poca/unas cuantas, ambos/los dos, todos los dias/cada dia, ningun/ninguna, etc.
There's a chapter on commands and requests, one on using the passive voice "Juan esta pintando las paredes" [Juan is painting the walls)becomes "Las paredes estan siendo pintadas [por Juan]" (The walls are being painted [by Juan])

~I liked the section on problematic prepositions including : to and toward (which can be "hacia" or "a" or "para" in different sentences) , into ("en", "dentro de"), onto, out of, and off, across, over, through, up and down, over, above, below, under, etc.

~And the last section on idiomatic constructions has useful expressions that if directly translated to English would not completely make sense (eg."llover sobre mojado" refers to adding one problem to another problem but literally translated would be in English like, "To rain over wet".), probably the author chose some of the most popular or most used idioms. (I asked my boyfriend to star which ones were used in Puerto Rico specifically because he's Puerto Rican and I'm mostly interested in expressions that are used there and he told me most of them were used). I'm sure they're popular in other Spanish-speaking countries as well.

Well, this is another excellent, clear, and for the most part very organzied addition to the Practice Makes Perfect series with super useful chapters and exercises that in my opinion any intermediate or advanced student of Spanish should have & go through.

Extremely Useful Complimentary Grammar Book for Spanish Students

This book on Spanish grammar is very useful. I wish I had it when I was studying Spanish in high school or college. It discusses so many nitty-gritty things that Spanish students struggle with.

When I first got it, I was under the impression that it would explain the past tenses, the subjunctive, etc. It's advanced Spanish grammar, right? When I read the table of contents, I was pleasently surprised to see that it discusses much more valuable information than just that. The following is its table of contents:

1. Object Pronouns and omission of subject pronouns
2. Some/any and other determiners
3. Adjectives
4. Adverbs
5. Commands & requests
6. Modal constructions
7. Impersonal sentences & the passive
8. Relative pronouns & conjunctions
9. Reported speech
10. Problematic prepositions I
11. Problematic prepositions II
12. Idiomatic constructions

Every chapter has very detailed information, along with exercises. My favorite chapters are the two that deal with prepostions. Prepositions are tricky in any language, and Spanish is no exception.

Having said all this, this book is not for absolute beginners. It's better suited to intermediate or advanced students. I majored in Spanish in college and find this book helpful. If I ever tutor students, I will probably refer to this text. So many of my students ask me questions that I don't always have the answer to. I simply "know without knowing." Now I can refer to this book when I need to.

A Great Resource -- Add it to Your Collection of Useful Spanish Books!

Advanced Spanish Grammar, by Rogelio Alonso Vallecillos, is a valuable book for reviewing many details about Spanish that textbooks often ignore. As with the other books in the Practice Makes Perfect series, it has a lot of exercises and the answer keys make it a good resource for independent study or as a supplement to any textbook or Spanish program.

I only have two minor reservations about it. One is that he doesn't use grammatical terminology. For some people, that is a plus. For me, it creates confusion because as a professor of Spanish, I want to know where to find additional exercises and explanations on specific areas of the language. When I don't see them labeled as such, I move on to the next book. For instance, in his table of contents, he has a chapter entitled "Reported Speech." I had to stop for a second to reclassify it as "indirect discourse." This makes the book less useful to experienced professors of Spanish who learned the proper taxomonies. At the same time, however, for many students, it won't really matter and in fact, will make the subject less threatening.

Lastly, the subjunctive is not dealt with head-on. On the other hand, as with everything he does address, he does a great job of explaining, and his examples are clear. For instance, although his treatment of sequence of tense is not dealt with by name, his examples should help any intuitive learner understand how to deal with it.

By all means, buy this book! It provides a good overview of many troublesome areas and does so in a non-threatening way -- and that is very important. Use it as a point of departure for the inevitable time when you'll need more focused practice.
