Restrained and dignified look at a family?s troubled history

Winner of 1987's Pulitzer Prize, this genteel and very old-fashioned tale of a troubled family is more in the tradition of Eudora Welty than that of Jonathan Franzen. Filtering the whole story through the eyes of Philip Carver, a collector of antique books in his late 40's, the author startles the reader by making no effort whatsoever to involve him vicariously in the action, something we now take for granted in modern fiction. Instead, he requires the reader to get to know Philip through his first-person narrative, draw conclusions about his background, and observe how unfolding events change his perceptions, not only about present actions, but of the past, as well.

Philip is, at heart, very much a southern gentleman, despite the fact that he thinks he has escaped his Nashville and Memphis heritage for New York, where he has lived for almost fifteen years, unmarried, with Holly Kaplan. Despite the painful relationship he has had with his autocratic but reserved father, now in his eighties, he responds to a series of phone calls from his unmarried sisters and returns to Memphis, where his father is planning to remarry, an eventuality which the sisters find anathema and which they are determined to countervail.

Both the immediate situation in Memphis and the history leading up to it are told in the past tense, with flashbacks to still earlier times, a rare and difficult narrative approach which keeps the reader at arm's length, but Taylor manages to give emotional power to unfolding events, in part, because Philip's narrative restraint contrasts so sharply with the meanness and manipulation of his "well-meaning" father and, now, his sisters. The irony grows as the reader sees parallels between the present circumstances of the father, his fianc�e, and the sisters, and events which happened many years ago. The tables have been turned, but Philip exhibits no sense of victory, no gloating, only growing self-awareness and understanding. He remains a gentleman to the very end in this most unusual and enlightening novel. Mary Whipple

Very restrained, yet emotionally intense story of a family

Peter Taylor, a native Tennessean, won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction with this story in 1987. That, together with my residence in Nashville, was enough to recommend it to me.

The story is narrated by Phillip Carver, a fiftyish man who grew up in Nashville and Memphis in a prosperous and well-known family. The patriarchal head of the family, George Carver, had a thriving legal practice in Nashville before moving his entire family to Memphis after being involved in a business scandal with a prominent business partner. This story is about the ramifications that move had upon Carver's children, now middle aged and unmarried - Phillip and his two sisters, Betsy and Josephine. Their lives, all successful in their own ways, have been driven by an abiding resentment towards their father, and the father, in turn, directed their lives in ways that would appear devious and pernicious, including despoiling marriage plans for each one. Phillip had made flight to New York some fifteen years prior to the time period described here (which I calculated to be in the mid-1960's). The narrator, his father, now in his early eighties, and his two sisters, all carry immense emotional baggage towards one another. But it is of a type of baggage that is never given overt voice, lying buried beneath a veneer of politeness and rectitude. Indeed, the narrator conveys deep-seated emotional memories with a kind of dispassionate elan, if that is possible; he feels a step removed from the events of his life, and his feelings towards his sisters and father are unresolved, even under-developed. Indeed, he never quite resolves his feelings towards them, but dutifully returns to Memphis frequently over the course of the story at the behest of his sisters, who have engaged in a lifelong obsession over their father and his affairs. Phillip does receive some revelation on these matters towards the end and sees his family members as they perhaps really were and are.

In some ways, very little happens in this story. I had a sense of wanting the writer to break out and really tell a story. The narrator's emotional aloofness serves to prevent this. Eventually, the story does take off, but it takes some time. The writing is very subtle, and Taylor does have a knack for understatement. But perhaps he was more of a short story writer, as his resume suggests - I did enjoy this book, especially the insights into the lives of the cultural elite in regions that I am very familiar with, but am ambivalent about its being awarded the highest literary prize. Maybe on reflection I will change this view, but for now, I am a little untouched by this work.

Fabulously written

Peter Taylor writes in a way that makes every moment enjoyable and worth remembering. The story of the lives of the members of the Carver family and the profound effect a move from Nashville to Memphis has on them is unforgettable. By the novel's end the reader is left with so much to consider, from the relationships of the characters to their motivations and eventual lifestyles. And unlike one of the last books I read, Philip Roth's American Pastoral, which also chronicled the life of an American family, Taylor's book is beautifully written but yet simple and clear - no egotistical self-loving prose here! I would actually plan on reading some of Taylor's other works, this was so enjoyable. You won't forget this one.

About the Author

Wayne W. Fisher, PhD, BCBA-D, is the H. B. Munroe Professor of Behavioral Research in the Munroe-Meyer Institute and the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, and Director of the Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders at the Munroe-Meyer Institute. Dr. Fisher’s research interests include preference, choice, and the assessment and treatment of autism and severe behavior disorders. He is a recipient of the Bush Leadership Fellowship Award and the American Psychological Association (Division 25) award for distinguished contributions to applied behavioral research.

Cathleen C. Piazza, PhD, is a Professor at the Munroe-Meyer Institute and the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, where she is also Director of the Pediatric Feeding Disorders Program. Dr. Piazza's research examines various aspects of feeding behavior in children with disabilities, with a focus on behavioral approaches to assessment and treatment.

Henry S. Roane, PhD, BCBA-D, is Associate Professor in the Departments of Pediatrics and Psychiatry at SUNY Upstate Medical University and Director of the University’s Family Behavior Analysis Clinic. He is currently an Associate Editor for Behavior Analysis in Practice and serves on the boards of directors of the Behavior Analysis Certification Board and the Society for the Experimental Analysis of Behavior. Just a warning: you can't read this kindle book on Kindle Paper White and possibly other Kindle devices. I called Amazon.com who informed me that I could read it on my PC, which worked fine. This is the only Kindle book that I've ever had this negative experience with.

Paranormal Investigations Spoiler Alert

The book will give the reader some very good information. I am glad that I bought it. The reason I only gave it 3 stars is because the author's ego gets in the way of the information at times. He spends some time telling how unprofessional other PI's are yet by the end of the book he inadvertently reveals that he isn't perfect either. The author absolutely takes HIMSELF way too seriously. As always Amazon.com is amazing...I give Amazon 5 stars.

Excellent book about paranormals

Extraordinary book. PARANORMAL INVESTIGATIONS is a well organized and descriptive book about paranormals. The author does an excellent job explaining paranormals without giving a personal opinion. Descriptions of the equipment used, to the steps to be taken during an investigation are easy to follow. A professional investigator would also benefit from the information in the book. Well done and a recommended read for everyone from the curious to the professional. Would love to see more books by the author on personal experiences. Recommended read. M. Lee's Kansas City

I enjoyed this wonderful easy to read book about Paranormal Investigations. I even enjoyed learning how the author got involved in the paranormal. Chad should write some more personal stories too regarding his experiences on the paranormal, I would read them. This book is quite a read! If you have a questioning attitude about this subject you will want to take it all in. Informative and based in the true history of Lucifer, deities, the catholic church and the crimes it has committed, and changed history for its own gain. For instance, Jesus birthday was moved from spring to the winter solstice to draw the pagans into the church. This is just one of many points made by the author, who seems very well versed on this subject. You can tell much research went into this book. It is a lot to take in, but well worth your time.

This will take the average person quite a long time to read, but it's worth every second in my opinion. For a book that's 700+ pages, the price is a great deal. The first chapter or two is a bit arduous, but contain key information upon which the genuinely interesting claims are built upon later on in the book. It's apparent that every claim is backed by extensive research (the bibliography is quite impressive). This is a book for anyone who has an interest in mythology. While the main point is to prove that Lucifer is the true lord in savior in Abrahamic religions, other topics such as the origins of various deities and crimes committed by the Church are discussed. As an eclectic pagan, I found the contents to be relevant to my spirituality, and I'm sure many others of pagan-based faiths will feel the same. I do enjoy the fact that it's not written in a monotone, textbook style. The styling is intellectual without being bland, which is appreciated in a book of such length. That's not to say it's an easy read though, there's a lot of content to go through so have some patience. Some of the points/arguments made in this book have been discussed elsewhere, but this is the first book I've seen that provides a such a thorough analysis on the topic of Lucifer being a lord an savior. All in all, a great, well-researched book.

Denis Nolan is an experienced market practitioner with over 35 years' experience in the global exchange, money and derivatives markets. As a chief dealer and treasurer in London, the Middle East and Japan during the 1970s and 1980s, he was among the very first treasurers of international finance institutions to embrace financial futures and derivatives as a logical extension of money and exchange dealing strategies. A founder member of LIFFE and a visiting lecturer at the City University Business School, London, he has written extensively on foreign exchange and addressed conferences and seminars on financial markets' instruments, derivatives, arbitrage, back office and Code of Conduct in Europe, the USA, the Middle East and Japan. He was commissioned by ACI to write a global 'Model Code of Conduct' for its 70 member countries, covering treasury OTC financial markets, which was published in 2000. Gordon Amos FAIBF FCIB is an international banking consultant, business adviser and lecturer with over 35 years' experience, particularly in treasury, capital markets, risk management and operations. Formerly a senior international banker, he has extensive knowledge of a wide range of banking, which he gained in the UK, Australia, Germany and India. Experience with ANZ Banking Group and previously National Westminster includes trade and international finance business, syndicated lending, equity and fixed interest investment, and portfolio management after formative years in retail banking. Another winner from Charlie Russel

Charlie Russel and Sharon Crawford have been putting out the gold standard in Small Business Server books since the first version of SBS shipped in the late 1990's. This latest effort is as comprehensive and accurate as their previous SBS titles, including not only direct information about installing and operating SBS, but also topics such as planning, security, migration, Hyper-V, data protection, and many others.

This book will save many SBS users from having to buy other books for related functions. For example, there are chapters on subjects like Group Policy, customizing SharePoint, and adding a Terminal Server. The authors' real world, hands-on experience in planning, implementing, and managing Small Business Server networks is clear in every chapter. Not limited to just the Small Business Server itself, this book gives the knowledge needed to manage every part of the small business's back office infrastructure.

This book is a valuable reference for anyone deploying Small Business Server Standard 2011, with or without the Premium Add-On, which is also covered in depth. I wouldn't be without it.

Running SBS 2011 at my church

I'm not a Windows Admin, but I am a "techie" kind of guy. More on the programming side though. But I'm responsible for IT at my church and recently set up SBS 2011 and created a true domain network. Since I've only experienced networking on the user side, I bought this and the pocket guide (probably overkill to get both) to have handy. I was able to find most everything I wanted. Its not quite written for someone at my level (probably intended for someone with more networking experience than me) but I am definitely glad I have it. With it and some internet searches I've been able to figure out everything I wanted to do. And I don't see any other book on the subject that would be the lower knowledge level that I am.

One example where this really helped: Setting up a group policy for network shares. I was able to see how to create a group policy to map network drives. So I've now got a "Staff" network drive as well as given the 5 employees their own personal network drive for storage and back up.

Very Basic Coverage of Windows SBS 2011

The book did not help me with all Windows SBS Server 2011 set up issues and problems, but it did help me with some. Setting up RAID in Windows SBS 2011 is very poorly covered, it does not explain how to set up different type of users and computers, how to make make and install master image on work stations etc. etc. And yet other simple issues are belabored too much.

Even though I have online Safari account, I could not get online access code to work. And if you are busy during the day on East Coast, calling their toll free number is very difficult because of their very limited Pacific time hours. In the book that I got, the two chapters are identical: connecting printers and computers to network - they both talk about connecting computers.

And DO NOT BUY THE KINDLE VERSION! The screen shot pictures are barely decipherable in the hard copy but they cannot be seen at all in the Kindle version. Did the authors ever bother to read their Kindle version before putting it up for sale?

Unfortunately, as of March 2012, there are very few books available on Windows SBS 2011, so you really have very limited choices.
