Thorough and enjoyable

I am writing my doctoral dissertation on lexical meaning and bought this book to make sure there weren't any glaring holes in my knowledge. This book was well-researched, well-organized, and funny to boot. (I literally laughed out loud at the brief section on Fodorian atomism.) Lexical meaning is under-represented in the literature, especially in linguistics but also in psychology. Books on linguistic meaning generally focus on the phrasal level, and books on psychological meaning generally focus on the conceptual level, so this book was a breath of fresh air. The book is relatively short, but I'd say that all of the major players are covered, and Murphy ends each chapter with a list of suggested further reading. Because this is a linguistics book, not a psychology book, Murphy doesn't devote a lot of space to psychological models of lexical meaning or empirical methods for investigating lexical meaning, but there is no shortage of other excellent books on these subjects, whereas it is difficult to find an accessible survey of lexical meaning from a linguistics perspective. I absolutely recommend this book to linguists and psychologists who are interested in gaining a solid foundation to lexical meaning and having a few laughs along the way.

Just great

This is a great book reflecting all modern linguistic schools and their approach to lexical meaning. All the main points seem to be covered. The scope of the treatment and sometimes also evaluation seem to be rather subjective, but this can hardly be avoided.
The book also includes tasks for the students, which makes the book even more valuable. Undergraduates or linguists minor might find some sections and some tasks a bit difficult, but this could be easily solved by the instructor who uses the book for his/her course.
The delivery of most ideas and the language of explication of the most complex issues seem to be lucid and unambiguous. The author must be an experienced and resourceful university professor.
I would definitely recommend the book to my colleagues teaching lexical semantics.

Radical and Refreshing Solutions

Modernising Money is a thoroughly researched and very timely investigation into the way money is created, managed and circulated by our commercial banks. Unlike many analyses of what is wrong with the current system however, it also offers very well thought through and workable solutions. As the Governor of the Bank of England is quoted as saying in October 2010 (quoted in the introduction) "Of all the many ways of organising banking, the worst is the one we have today."

To know what needs to change in our current system requires us to understand how it is operating today. Since the world of finance is highly complex and seemingly beyond the grasp of ordinary mortals this is no easy task. But, as this book demonstrates every detail of the way money is created and circulated can be easily understood. This book explains in simple language how money is created and who controls it.

The first chapters provide a fascinating account of how money has developed from the first coins produced in Ancient Greece, China and India in the 6th century BC right up to the electronic and virtual money of today. It describes how contrary to common belief, early complex societies relied not on a system of barter to conduct their trade but rather by making gifts to one another on the understanding that the favour would one day be returned. In other words there existed an undefined system of credits and debits. Only when these were quantified did money start to develop as units of account.

In tracing the historical development of money and banking from classical times right up to modern Britain, the authors present a very clear picture of each new step that was taken . They describe how and when the Bank of England was established, what its original remit was in the 17th century and how this gradually evolved during the course of the Industrial Revolution and beyond. An understanding of how money works and the effect it has on power relationships is essential if we are to understand why for instance the Breton-Woods post war settlement was pivotal in handing world leadership over to the United States. Signing the agreement made the dollar a global reserve currency.

The working of the current banking system is clearly described as are the problems that it causes. The idea that banks simply lend out what other customers deposit is very far from the truth. In granting a loan the bank simply notes a debit and a credit entry on their balance sheet. The money given out is recorded as a liability, the agreement to pay back the loan as an asset. In other words money (and debt) is created in that moment. Money supply increases when loans are agreed and reduced when it is paid back. This also means that the money I put in the bank is not my money but in that moment belongs to the bank. In return I have the promise that the bank will pay me an equivalent amount on demand.

Another important phenomenon is that of seignorage, the difference between the value of money and the cost to produce and distribute it. Up until about forty years ago a good percentage of the money in circulation was produced by the Bank of England and the seignorage went to the Treasury. Today 97% of all the money in circulation is created as debt by the banks and the seignorage profit goes to them. The result is that between 2000 and 2009 the state has foregone a trillion pounds. How many public services could that have funded?

Having carefully analysed and assessed the problems in our banking system in the first half of the book, the authors then offer a series of credible and relatively easy to introduce reforms that would radically alter the way banks operate by addressing six objectives

Create a stable money supply based on the needs of the economy.
Reduce the burden of personal, household and government debt.
Encourage investment in the real (non-financial) economy.
Re-align risk and reward.
Provide a structure of banking that allows banks to fail.

To achieve these aims some simple reforms are proposed, reforms that can be implemented without starting completely from scratch. These are described in an exact and easily understandable way. For example a major problem occurs when those who create the money also determine its use or when those who should be brokers have an interest in the money itself. It is vitally important that these functions are separated. After the reform the Bank of England becomes the organ whereby money is created (not just cash as at present but electronic money too). The commercial banks then lend out money that has been created elsewhere. The activity of money creation and loan arranging are kept clearly distinct. In practical terms this means that individuals will have access to debt and risk free money via Bank of England accounts. If they can then also open investment accounts with commercial banks and have a share in the risks and benefits.

Each of the clearly defined objectives are addressed in turn down to the smallest detail. Given the political will the whole reform could be easily and immediately implemented.

As well as offering real solutions to current problems this book promises to be an important and easy to read textbook on economics that deserves to become a key resource work for all students of economy.

A NOTE FOR READERS OUTSIDE THE UK
Although this book is written with the UK banking system in mind, the analysis is equally applicable to the banking and monetary system of any modern economy. While there are minor differences in rules and regulations between countries, almost all economies today are based on a monetary system that is fundamentally the same as that of the UK. Equally, the reforms prosposed here can be applied to any country that has its own currency, or any currency bloc, with only minor tailoring to the unique situation of each country.

"Money ranks with fire and the wheel as an invention without which the modern world would be unimaginable. Unfortunately, out-of-control money now injures more people than out-of-control fires or wheels. Loss of control stems from the privilege enjoyed by the private banking sector of creating money from nothing and lending it at interest in the form of demand deposits. This power derives from the current design of the banking system, and can be corrected by moving to a system where new money can only be created by a public body, working in the public interest."

"The times they are a changing."

In my opinion, the 3 most important books of the 20th century were: Small is Beautiful - Fritz Schumacher, The Breakdown of Nations - Leopold Kohr and De-schooling Society by Iva Ilich. If you have some sympathy with this opinion, then the probably like me, you will think that this could be one of the 3 most important books of the 21st century. If however you still believe what governments, banks and economists are telling us, you will probably think that it is a laughable work of fiction. You would be wrong, but that would not stop you enjoying your tabloid newspaper (at least in the short term).
The way the financial system works, or rather doesn't work, is at the heart of most of the ills of our time. Without being a polemic against systems or personalities, this book analyses the serious financial problems that society has and then proposes workable solutions. Many people will not like the solutions proposed, but then flat earthers used to be in the majority!
A "must read" for anyone with the slightest interest in the future of the human race.

My students enjoy reading this book and it helps them memorize the names of the shapes. The design and colors are very appealing to young Spanish learners. They also enjoy counting the shapes in each page.

I've seen better bilingual books, but this one is decent. Some of the words are pretty advanced for young children though, so maybe better suited for preschool age- kindergarten or up bilingual students.

About the Author
J. Peter Burkholder is Distinguished Professor of Musicology at Indiana University. He has written and edited four books on Charles Ives, as well as numerous articles on topics spanning from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century for The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, Journal of the American Musicological Society, Journal of Musicology, Musical Quarterly, 19th-Century Music, Music Theory Spectrum, and other journals. He has served as President, Vice President, and Director-at-Large of the American Musicological Society and on the board of the College Music Society. His writings have received awards from the American Musicological Society, the Society for American Music, and ASCAP.

Claude V. Palisca, late professor of music at Yale University, began his collaboration on A History of Western Music with the Third Edition. Among his many publications are a history of Baroque music and a collection of scholarly essays on Italian Renaissance music.

About the Author
The author and editor of numerous books and articles in the areas of ethics and social and political philosophy, William H. Shaw obtained a Ph.D. in political philosophy from the London School of Economics and teaches philosophy at San Jose State University, where he served as chair of the department for eleven years. He has also been a visiting professor at the University of Zimbabwe, the University of Hong Kong, and the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. He has two other books with Cengage Learning, SOCIAL AND PERSONAL ETHICS and MORAL ISSUES IN BUSINESS (with Vincent Barry).

Vincent Barry is Professor of Philosophy Emeritus at Bakersfield College, having taught there for thirty-four years as well as being a highly successful philosophy textbook author.

Well, I happen to disagree with previous comment. Not only did I like the course, I also liked the book. It wasn't an easy reading, I got to tell you. Sometimes it took more than one reading and several minutes or reflecting to figure out what the authors were talking about. But in the end it all made sense. And as a bonus the book went into great detail on philosophy, psychology, political science, and economics which I found quite helpful, since as a business major I didn't have a chance to take courses in first three subjects mentioned. The best thing, however, was, that almost a year later in packed Helsinki bar, I was able for about 15 minutes to talk about greatest German and French philosophers - all about them I learned from this book.

4 stars= some good arguments to consider, and issues it provokes. Being a philisopher student, some of these arguments are strong.

Nuntius said: "Keynes, Hayek, and Friedman" were skipped in discussion. I know that Friedman was well included, in the case studies and in some chapters. Look at 4.3 for a real focus.

He also said that "Like ssaber, I was disappointed to find a three page "defense" of capitalism and a ten page attack of it in Chapter 4, "The Nature of Capitalism.""

I noticed a sentence stating that we can't dismiss a capitalist society because of the fact of where it brought us, where as the other systems didn't do so well. Therefore, I wouldn't really consider this a dismiss on capitalism.

For example, in page 158, they say "The debate over capitalism is a large and important one; the presentation that follows should be viewed as a stimulus to further discussion and not as the last word on th pros and cons of capitalism." Furthermore, "complete coverage of capitalism's features has filled many books" (154). This clearly states what the authors intend, as a mere stimulus. In fact, having a whole chapter seems to be sufficient to their intent.

Maybe they can expand the subject to add more back and forth criticisms, but we know that debate can be long. As long as they made that statement of it merely being a stimulus, I'm ok with it.

After all, capitalism is a very new concept with the foundation of the industrial revolution. Of course debate should ensue. But I guess they should end the chapter stating the "nonetheless, a capitalist framework has got us great heights."

Great, Well Researched and Practical Text Book

This was the required textbook for my Business Ethics class.

This textbook is great! Very informative with lots of depth/research into general ethics. It then applies these theories to business with examples.

It starts each chapter with a real-life recent case study story and has several case studies and real-life examples at the end of each chapter for further discussion.

Overall, an excellent book to learn from. All the real-life ethical issues will keep you interested and wanting to read more.

Explains Motivations Behind Bad Architecture

These and other questions E. Michael Jones attempts to answer in The Logos of Architecture and Its Opponents. The book focuses primarily on the work and motivations of three architects: Peter Eisenman, Frank Gehry, and Phillip Johnson in an adventure through an inferno of asymmetry, disproportion and chaotic ugliness with Jones serving as an interpretive guide. It's not just ugliness that is on the tour however, as Jones contrasts subversive postmodern architecture with classical ideals from ancient Greece which align with the Catholic faith of Thomas Gordon Smith, an architect who is reviving the classical style. Ultimately the book is a bold but interesting interpretation of the relationship between ideas and art with a theological appraisal at the end. I recommend this book for anyone interested in why bad architecture exists.
