Excellent textbook! very thorough and clear explanation of reinforced concrete theory, analysis and design. I strongly recommend it to professors and students, it is based on ACI 318-14. I adopted it for my Reinforced Concrete Design Course at the University of Illinois at Chicago for Fall 2015 semester.

About the Author
Harold Evans is a British-born journalist and writer who was editor of the Sunday Times from 1967 to 1981. A graduate of Durham University, he has written a number of bestselling histories. He followed the late Alistair Cooke in commentaries on America for the BBC. An American citizen since 1993, he has held positions as editor-in-chief of the Atlantic Monthly Press, founding editor of the prize-winning Conde Nast Traveler; editorial director of the Atlantic and US News and the New York Daily News; and president and publisher of Random House. He holds the British Press Awards' Gold Award for Lifetime Achievement of Journalists. In 2001 British journalists voted him the all-time greatest British newspaper editor, and in 2004 he was knighted. Since 2011, he has been editor-at-large for Reuters.

I would recommend this book to every recent college grad entering the job market and to anybody who has to communicate their ideas in writing. It is a fast read—I did not read the whole thing but I read enough to know that it is a good book to get my kids, both sharking their way up in the working world. Very useful. Good job Harold Evans.

Had to stop reading

I bought this book after reading a favorable review in the Wall Street Journal. I returned it after reading the first quarter of the book. I didn't know that you could return a kindle book. My reaction to the book was visceral. I couldn't bring myself to read another word. My reaction grew stronger. I wanted the book out of my life, out of my kindle. Turns out I was in time to return it. I'll be pleased to receive the refund, but the truth is that the act of removing the book from my kindle was worth it even without getting money back.

The author's advice is nothing new. Use the active voice. Keep the modifier and the modified near each other. Be concise, be clear. ("Eschew obfuscation" is another way of saying that. I saw that one written on a rest room wall in a law school many years ago.) Absolutely, positively avoid adverbs. (That was a joke.) Don't take candy from adjectives. And so on.

He offers examples for correction. The writing that he puts under the microscope is so bad that it could be improved just by rearranging the words at random. There is no great skill needed to repair such awful prose. True, the examples are taken from real life. But if you are reading this book, you are avoiding these errors already.

It was his insistence on parading his political views that caused me to send the book back instead of just putting it aside. His political views are what you would expect from the editor of a string of mainstream news publications. Whether you find those views congenial or annoying, they have nothing to do with good writing. The author ought to have written another book and put them there.

If you have gotten to the end of this book and tell me that the really good stuff starts right where I stopped reading, I will congratulate you on seeing it through. I usually feel an obligation to finish a book I've started. Not this time.

4.25 stars--SHATTERED is the third instalment in Cynthia Eden's contemporary, adult LOST romantic suspense series focusing on the men and women of LOST (Last Option Search Team). This is criminal psychologist Dr. Sarah Jacobs, and dark and dangerous businessman Jax Fontaine's storyline. Although SHATTERED is the third in the series, it can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty.

Told from several third person perspectives SHATTERED focuses on a killer who has targeted both Sarah Jacobs and Jax Fontaine. Sarah's past is mired in death; a guilt she harbours for the sins of another, and with it comes Sarah's resolve of acceptance for something of which she was never responsible. When a series of copy cat killings hits too close to home, Sarah finds herself partnered with Jax Fontaine -a man with an even darker past and dangerous secrets. As the threats against Sarah begin to escalate, the police begin to look at Jax as a possible suspect when all of the clues lead back to the man in question.

The relationship between Sarah and Jax is one of mutual attraction. The sexual energy is palpable; Jax is a man who knows what he wants, and he wants Sarah for now and in the future. Jax is an enigma; a sexy but dangerous man whose power and energy commands respect as well as doubt about his true intent. The $ex scenes are provocative and seductive. This is a book that will stay with you after you are done. I loved this book and it picks up right where Book #2 lets off. The storyline is gripping and keeps you on the edge of your seat while you are reading it. I kept trying to read faster because I could not wait to see what would happen next, but then when I finished I wished I had read slower because I didn't want it to end. Sarah and Jax are super together and so well written they seem to take you along with them on their crazy thrilling ride! Since these were the last two single characters we knew it had to include at least one of them in a romance, but why include only one when you can get both? Loved the way they work together both on cases and romantically. If you are looking for a romantic suspense novel to read that will keep you glued to the pages, this is it!

This is the third book in the series. While I do think this can be read as a standalone, I have read the previous two and enjoyed them, and I think it does make the characters more meaningful, so I highly suggest reading this series in order. As I have said before Cynthia Eden’s books are like crack for me. They are addictive, with a quick short high, that doesn’t last long, and leaves you scrambling for the next one, often with very little memory of that previous high. Fortunately for us readers, book crack is not in fact actual crack, and so we are free to indulge as we please and as often as we please.

LOST, Last Option Search Team, is a group that finds the missing. All the members have their demons, their secrets, for why they ended up where they are now. Dr. Jacobs secrets seemed to be darker, the way she can put her self into the minds of killers and the hints about her past, and that seeming couldn’t have been more true. I’ll admit though, I was kind of hoping she’d end up with guilt stricken good guy Wade, but this was so much better.

Jax Fontaine has secrets, secrets from those around him, and secrets even from himself. He’s dark, and edgy, and oft times brutal. But he can handle Sarah’s darkness. And from my perspective, he’s sexy and I could just eat him up. However, I am completely unsure who the hell that man on the cover is supposed to be, because it certainly isn’t Jax Fontaine,

So let me get the negatives out of the way first. For those who are bothered, this is sort of insta-love, or at least insta-lust. Granted it started in the previous book, but that only adds a couple of days to their relationship. It worked fine for me, but your mileage may vary. There was also a rather lackadaisical approach to birth control that I was less than pleased with. But that is my particular hot button, so again, YMMV.

But on to the good. This book was a roller coaster of twists and turns. Just absolutely dozens of twists and turns. By the end of it was completely shocked by who the villain turned out to be, and that doesn’t happen too often. I may not completely guess, but they are almost always on my radar. This one just hit me with several blind sides. The chemistry between the two main characters was smoking and sweet. We got just enough glimpses to be sure previous couples were still on the right path to their happily ever afters without it being so much that it overwhelms the current story, or that I think it would be intrusive to new readers. And like I said, the action and the mystery kept me absolutely riveted.

Eden’s romantic suspense don’t usually hit my re-read shelves, they just aren’t that compelling or deep. But they are always consistent and I devour them gleefully because she never lets me down. She’s probably also one of the more prolific writers on my must read list with over 60 titles between her paranormal and her romantic suspense lines, and I haven’t had a true dud yet. So for a book crack dealer, she’s always my best bet. Shattered is great addition for the addicted, and I can’t wait for Victoria and Wade’s respective stories.

About the Author
Scott F. Gilbert, the Howard A. Schneiderman Professor of Biology at Swarthmore College, teaches developmental biology, developmental genetics, and the history of biology. After receiving his B.A. from Wesleyan University, he pursued his graduate and postdoctoral research at The Johns Hopkins University and the University of Wisconsin. Dr. Gilbert is the recipient of several awards, including the first Viktor Hamburger Award for excellence in developmental biology education, the 2004 Alexander Kowalevsky Prize for evolutionary developmental biology, an honorary degree from the University of Helsinki, and the Medal of François I from the Collège de France. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a corresponding member of the St. Petersburg Society of Naturalists. His research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation and involves the developmental genetic mechanisms by which the turtle forms its shell.

Required Textbook for upper division biology class

I bought this textbook for my upper division college Developmental Biology class. I've only read the first 5 chapters of this book. I must say: the organization is pretty good, and it is fairly easy to read. I bought the loosed-leaf version at my school bookstore for $88 with tax and then returned it because Amazon is much cheaper AND this is the hardcover version. The pictures inside the book are really good and very high quality in this book. There is a summary section after every chapter, and this is helpful to brush up on the things that you just read. My professor just uses the figures for her lecture (I'm pretty sure that the company who owns this textbook allows you to buy PowerPoint versions of this book to present to students). The PowerPoint version contains all of the figures in the textbook, and my professor mainly tests us on the figures because they practically detail the entire chapter.

Pros: My favorite thing about this book is the Signaling Pathway section because not only do they provide a schematic picture of it, the textbook also has a simplified version (which is the part you will probably remember later on in life).

Cons: the book tries to add some humor. I don't think it's funny, and it doesn't help me remember. Luckily, these "opinions" are like 1 sentence every few pages, so it's not much. Maybe the humor might be enjoyable to others, this might help you remember. It didn't help me because I am really bad a reading comprehension so not much is funny to me.

After getting trapped into Wilt and Hake...

Wilt and Hake was the assigned text, and I felt obligated to read it... but that was a chore.

So I ordered Gilbert to help me read the "easy" book and it saved my grade hide. After struggling through that horrific mess of pondering verbiage, pedantic textual hectoring, and outright inaccuracies, this book rescued me and was... Fascinating. Helpful. Encouraging of a greater interest. Everything a great quality text book should do... this book did.

I would marry Scott Gilbert and bear his children if I weren't married and sterile.

THIS is what every textbook SHOULD be like.

Great overview of the subject

Its been 2 weeks into the semester, and I only have good things to say about this text.
The outline that Gilbert purposes for the subject is straightforward and quite helpful. Maybe its the nature of the subject or how Gilbert approaches Developmental Biology, but I appreciate how he writes a good amount about the historical details of previous experiments and scientist. It allows you to go on, in a sense, relive the journey to scientific progression. I also appreciate how Gilbert understands the value of diagrams and photos.
I agree with other reviews in how the textbook is more for the undergraduate level as opposed to the graduate level. However, this text does give the foundations for graduate level reading.
