A Comic Book version

This is not the side by side translation of this play that the "No Fear Shakespeare" series is known for. I thought it would have a few pictures. But is a comic book version. I returned my copy upon receipt. It would have helped if Barnes and Noble would let Amazon post pictures of a few of the pages.

Enjoyable Format for the Story

I am not an avid reader of graphic novels, so I cannot speak to how good this book is as compared to others. Nor am I familiar with the works Shakespeare and the rest of his canon, outside of the few things I had to read in grade school over 15 years ago. I am a technologist who was looking for a means of experiencing the story of "Macbeth". I wanted it to come from a book, hoping to eschew any television or film versions that might exist, and I did not want to seek out a live performance of the play.
I read through the original Act I of "Macbeth", and afterwards, I found that I had no idea what was going on. To the extent that I did understand, it was a bit of a struggle. It felt like watching a foreign film in a language I do not speak without any subtitles. I did not want this to detract from my overall experience of the remaining acts, so I sought out something else. The text-based "No Fear" version, with plain English translations alongside the original text, was very helpful, but ruined the flow of the story.
As other reviewers have stated, this is a comic book version. The dialogue itself has been abbreviated from the actual play, which I would expect from any SparksNotes versions. The sketches themselves are black-and-white, with enough detail to help convey what is happening, but they do not steal the show. The pictures themselves let the dialogue remain the central element of the story. It is a good balance.
Dramatic purists may not like it, but once I found myself able to breeze through the story without confusion, and without having to learn Shakespeare's metered and antiquated English, I found the story itself to be riveting. Years of English classes could not do what this book took a few hours to: convince me that taking the trouble to learn how to properly read Shakespeare's actual dialogue might be worthwhile, in order to experience the works of a master storyteller.
I do hope that the illustrator, Ken Hoshine, chooses to do more of these. Thanks for this one, Ken.

Great for ELL and SPED

I bought this for my ELL and SPED students to facilitate their comprehension of Macbeth. This has also helped me engage capable but disinterested readers in the text. Highly recommended.
